Job description

The Miami Workers Center is seeking an Eviction Defense Canvasser to deal with people at risk or experiencing eviction in Miami-Dade County.

The Miami Workers Center (MWC) organizes towards dignity, power, and self-determination with workers, tenants, women, and families across Miami. We fight for the rights, resources, and respect our community deserves. Our members are working-class Black and Brown women who hail from Latin America, the Caribbean, and African American communities of Miami-Dade. Our members are predominantly tenants, and many work in the cleaning and caring economies as domestic, child & homecare workers both formally and informally. We believe in self-determination over our bodies, our homes, our labor, our land. We believe in a Miami where all of us can live, work, and grow in our full dignity.

You are a dynamic, strategic, self-starter who has demonstrated experience in canvassing and working with diverse people. You are mission driven and excited about developing new skills and relationships. You work well with diverse teams and can handle a fast-paced environment. You have excellent emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. You are looking to make an impact and advance effective efforts for building the power of working-class people who call Miami home. Fluency in English and Spanish or Haitian Kreyol is preferred to be considered for this role.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct direct outreach, calls, and texts to tenants facing eviction
  • Connecting tenants to tenant know your rights training and other information sessions and resources.
  • Identifying renters who are at risk of eviction and refer them to the legal support necessary through legal partners.
  • Contemporaneously document all outreach activities to track outcomes and ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Document and record stories of tenants facing eviction or recently evicted.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience creating and conducting leadership development activities.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish/Kreyol)
  • Ability to work independently and at times a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work across racial and cultural lines.

This is a part-time, temporary position of 20 hours weekly reporting directly to the Field Manager. Compensation is $25/hour (pay periods are biweekly)

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
