Job Description
Location of work: Assignment to one of the following schools: Martin Luther King, Jr MS OR Visitacion Valley MS
Essential Job Functions: Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator the Student Advisors provide assistance with the academic advising for students at an assigned CAP target school. Academic advising includes information related to college admissions, financial aid, and other topics associated with pursuing a higher education and promoting a college-going culture, including:
  • Identify and recruit applicants and and assess eligibility for participation
  • Assist and attend program orientations, trainings, field trips, and meetings
  • Assist in the planning, preparation, and implementation of program events/activities
  • Conduct outreach to assigned schools/student caseload 2-3 days/week
  • Assess and determine participants' educational needs and academic potential
  • Provide one-on-one or group academic and advising services to students at target schools
  • Conduct career exploration, academic preparation, and personal development workshops
  • Provide administrative assistance as needed;
  • Assist with maintaining accurate and up-to-date participants' files
  • Ability to attend some weekend and evening events.
  • Perform related duties as needed.

Qualifications:
  • 3rd or 4th year USF undergrad OR USF graduate student in Counseling Program preferred
  • USF College Federal Work-Study Program recipient preferred.
  • Prior experience and ability to effectively work with (middle school) students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural backgrounds preferred.
  • Mission-driven and passionate about programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese)
  • Strong computing skills (including Google suite, database, video conferencing).
  • Prior experience working with first generation college going students preferred
  • Prior TRIO experience preferred
  • Background similar to USF CAP participants is a plus.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
  • Incumbents will be located at the target middle school site and occasionally at the CAP office located in the School of Education building.
  • Orientations, training, actual work hours, and any program activities and services are in person but may be conducted virtually as governed by any changing situation.
  • Work involves traveling to and from USF and the target school site.
  • Periodic lifting and carrying 15-20 lbs (Program supplies, workshop materials)
  • Valid California driver's license, safe driving record, current automobile insurance, and use of personal car preferred but not required.

NOTE: Employment contingent on DOJ fingerprinting & background check clearance.
