JOB TITLE:ESOL Instructor
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time(Morning, Afternoon or Evening Classes)
REPORTS TO: Director ofReadiness Initiatives & Community Outreach
LOCATION: City-Wide
ABOUTAAFSC:
TheArab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC) is a non-profit, non-sectarianorganization established in 1994 to provide culturally and linguisticallycompetent, trauma-informed social services. Our mission is to empowerimmigrants and refugees with the tools they need to successfully acclimate tothe world around them and become active participants in theircommunities. While our doors are open to all, with 36 languages representedacross staff, AAFSC has developed cultural and linguistic expertise servingmembers of NYC's Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian(AMENAMSA) immigrant and refugee communities.
AAFSCworks across four key priority areas - Promote, Prevent, Get Ready, andCommunicate - in order to achieve our ultimate goal of strengthening families.We promote mental and physical well-being and community power. We ensurefamilies are knowledgeable about their rights and equipped to participate incivic society with confidence and security. We strengthen families, preventchild abuse, and work to end domestic and gender-based violence. We provide thetools for learners of every age to succeed. Finally, we uplift the voices andneeds of under-represented communities and champion gender, racial,restorative, and immigrant justice.
JOB SUMMARY:
The ESOLInstructor at AAFSC works within our Readiness Initiatives Program to providelimited English proficient adults with contextualized instruction that givesstudents the civic and English language skills to effectively participate inthe English-speaking environment in which they live. The instructor fosters aclassroom environment that offers participants the resources, opportunities andsupport needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency. A successfulperson in this role is an experienced, creative, hard-working and dynamic ESOLinstructor who has experience creating student-centered learning environments,using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, jobreadiness and technology in the classroom. A commitment to immigrant, refugeeand low-income communities is essential for this role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop & write new lesson plans, or adapt existing lesson plans, to meet student needs and stated class objectives.
  • Provide instruction and facilitate classroom activities in line with stated class objectives.
  • Prepare students to take the Citizenship test and pass the interview.
  • Build instructional activities around the four interdependent components of reading: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Provide a variety of instructional deliveries including individualized instruction, small group instruction, and whole class instruction.
  • Facilitate learning with textbooks, workbooks, lectures, computer based educational programs, audio/visual aids, hands-on activities, and use of tutors.
  • Assist students with the development of digital literacy skills and provide learning activities designed to enhance financial literacy skills.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records.
  • Ensure all lessons and structured activities have clearly defined outcomes with measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for adult participants.
  • Maintain active repository of curricula that is made accessible and available on organizational servers.
  • In collaboration with Program Director and Associate Director, continuously evaluate and refine curricula and activity plans to ensure success for adult learners attending program.
  • Ensure all paperwork and documentation is completed in a timely manner.
  • Report any issues in the classroom (either with students or volunteers) immediately to supervisor.
Ambassador & Champion
• EveryAAFSC team member serves as an ambassador of the organization and champion ofAAFSC's mission, vision, and values. This includes the following:
o Cultivate relationships on behalfof and in support of the organization in partnership with Senior Leadership andthe Resource Development team. This includes being sensitive to and aware ofothers, providing every client, partner and participant with high-qualityservice, professional communication, and follow through, and always keepingSenior Leadership and the Resource Development team aware of any opportunities,challenges, or updates.
o All team members are expected tosupport the Resource Development team with any requests in a timely manner,including, but not limited to: grant applications, reports, attendance atmeetings, hearings, or other events, and sharing of AAFSC social media, flyers,and other externally-facing communications.
o Demonstratea willingness to respond to evolving community needs, including, but notlimited to, making referrals in light of community needs, supporting with thedevelopment of and implementation of new initiatives or programming, and raisingawareness of new or evolving needs.
o Always act with integrity,positivity, dedication, and professionalism within the office and externally.This includes, but is not limited to, email communication, verbalcommunication, communication with colleagues and peers, communication withclients, or communication with external partners or agencies.
Other duties and responsibilities
  • Participate in internal and external meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Program Director.

BACKGROUND AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Teachingcertification (TESLA, TESOL, CELTA, etc.) required.
• BESTPlus certification required.
• Abilityto teach both remote online classes and in-person classes.
• Experiencewith teaching beginner adult students, including Literacy Learners, required.
• Excellent writing and editing skills; strong verbalcommunication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with teachingmulti-levels in a single classroom.
• Flexible with an openenrollment schedule
• Openness to learning aboutthe languages, cultures, and customs of the students to better serve them.
• Must complete 18 hours ofprofessional development training each year.
• Experience in lessonplanning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programmingfor adult learners required.
• Open to learning more aboutcultural responsiveness, trauma-informed education, and language instruction.
• Proven ability to workindependently and meet deadlines.
• Passion for AAFSC's missionand vision.
• Job contingent onpre-employment background check and fingerprint clearance.
• U.S. Work Authorizationrequired.
