Form of workUtilizing a cooperative team approach with the supervision and direction of the RN, and with previous training, the ER Nurse Technician will perform the following duties on the Emergency Room.
ResponsibilitiesDuties and Responsibilities of ER Tech- All duties that may be assigned to a nurse aid.
- All duties that may be assigned to a unit secretary.
- Communicates with patients and families in a kind and caring professional manner.
- Assist with the nursing care of emergency room patients.
- Understand the importance of symptoms and necessity of response to the symptoms in an emergency situation.
- Demonstrates the ability to understand all types of emergency care such as cardiac, trauma, medical, surgical, and pediatric emergencies and surgical procedures done within the scope of the ER services.
- Promotes a harmonious relationship between ER personnel and ER and Staff physicians and other hospital departments.
- Insures that infection control measures are carried out.
- Maintains computer skills for order entry.
- Able to utilize hospital paging system
- Able to answer ER phone efficiently & professionally
- Maintains current BLS
- Able to utilize the ER monitors including cardiac monitoring, B/P, pulse oximetry
- Able to utilize the fluid warmer
- Performs pulse oximetry
- Attach cardiac monitor
- Able to do crutch fitting
- Performs visual acuities
- Able to do eye irrigation
- Sterile wound dressing application
- Does enemas
- Does care and maintenance on drain tubes
- Collects specimens of sputum, urine, and stool and transports to lab, identifying patient and labeling according to policy
- Assist with the following procedures: chest tube insertion, orthopedic procedures, laceration repair and gastric lavage.
- All duties that may be assigned to a nurse aid.
- All duties that may be assigned to a unit secretary.
- Assist with admission assessment.
- Care and maintenance of various drainage tubes.
- Wound care only Stage 2 and less.
- Charting of patient care given and special treatments performed.
- Removals of IV, SL only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Removal of Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Obtain sterile urine from Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Wound culture.
- Insert Foley (Foley will be inserted only after this is covered in their nursing program and has been supervised 3X.
- All duties that may be assigned to a nurse aid.
- All duties that may be assigned to a unit secretary.
- Assist with admission assessment.
- Care and maintenance of various drainage tubes. Will not care for any tube he/she has not been checked off on.
- Wound care. Technique supervised 3X. Nurse tech will be shown the first time wound care is performed for any new patient.
- Preps and douches
- Administer tube feeding to peg tube only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Charting of patient care given and special treatments performed.
- Assists in developing care plans (will have care plan co-signed by a supervising RN)
- Removals of IV, SL only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Removal of Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Obtain sterile urine from Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
- Surgery preps
- Doctor's orders (under RN supervision)
- Wound culture.
- Insert Foley (Foley will be inserted only after this is covered in their nursing program and has been supervised 3X.
- Oral suction (only after this is covered in their nursing program and supervised 3X.
Required
Preferred
Education:
ER Tech-Is a student in good standing in a licensed registered nurse program and has completed one year, a Certified Nursing Assistant, a Nursing Assistant, EMT, or EMT student.
Nurse Tech I-Is a student in good standing in a licensed nursing program and has completed a minimum of 6 months nursing classes and has started hospital clinical.
Nurse Tech II-Is a student in good standing in a licensed nursing program and has completed a minimum of 1 year of nursing classes.
Experience:
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
BLS required
ACLS and PALS encouraged
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Post orientation; demonstrate knowledge as to patient care, medications, ability to recognize emergency situations then take appropriate actions.
Completed CNA checklist and is working on Nurse Tech checklist
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
