Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity
WSDOT Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) shop is seeking to fill an Equipment Technician Lead vacancy in Vancouver, WA. The primary function of this position is to lead mechanics in the TEF equipment weld and repair shop, and to perform fabrication works, Preventative Maintenance (PM), inspections, diagnoses, and major and minor mechanical repairs of all types of heavy and/or industrial/commercial inventoried equipment within the Regions area of responsibility. SWR TEF provides well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner.
What to Expect
The typical schedule is Monday-Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Travel is an expectation of this position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Employee will have a service vehicle available and be prepared to stay at one site for long periods of time.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician Lead will:
  • Plan, schedule, and direct operations, fabrication, outfitting, and repair activities.
  • Assign duties to Equipment Technicians.
  • Evaluate workload status and operation delays.
  • Lead the performance of fabricating and welding on all Regional and statewide equipment and vehicles to meet the needs of equipment for user groups.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities, such as: time, equipment, fuel, and oil reports for the personnel and equipment under their jurisdiction.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and make needed repairs to equipment used in highway maintenance and engineering.
  • Operate shop equipment, various hand tools, and other equipment used in heavy equipment repair.
  • Road-test vehicles and equipment.
  • Develop, implement, and lead the Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) in adherence with safety guidelines.
  • Organize and clean shop, dispose hazardous materials to ensure all areas are safe and orderly.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
AND
  • Three (3) years of managerial or administrative experience in operating an automotive, heavy, and/or industrial commercial vehicles or equipment fleet. OR
  • Three (3) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic repairing light and heavy equipment.

In addition to:
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement to operate trucks of 26,000 GVW and above. CDL may be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
  • Experience working independently to prioritize workload and handle multiple assignments.
  • Experience utilizing computer software, such as MS Excel, Access, and Word.
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Experience working with man lifts and aerial equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing electrical and mechanical problems of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
  • Ability to safely move, place, and manipulate objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Currently possess a valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • At least four (4) years of experience performing journey-level equipment repair OR at least four (4) years of experience performing preventive maintenance and minor vehicle repair.
  • Experience planning, assigning, reviewing, and checking the work of others.
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.
  • Two years of experience diagnosing WSDOT fleet equipment.
  • Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.
  • Experience designing and fabricating specialty parts and/or tools.
  • Experience using the Department's fleet management system (M5).

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 20% assignment pay.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies.
