Job description

The City of Graham is looking for an Equipment Operator I in the Streets & Hwys division. This person will operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment and perform various skilled construction and maintenance duties in various divisions of the public works department. General Statement of Duties

Under regular supervision, operates a variety of maintenance and construction equipment and performs various skilled construction and maintenance duties in various divisions of the public works department. Work requires special skills and care around traffic areas.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class works as a member of a maintenance crew led by a supervisor or crew leader. This employee is primarily an Equipment Operator; however, manual maintenance and construction tasks are also required. Responsibilities include the safe operation of equipment which may include tractor mowers, tractors with trailers, backhoes, weed-eaters, leaf trucks, loaders, bulldozers, paint machines, flatbed trailers, boring machines, rodding machines, flusher trucks, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, rollers, tamps, and other equipment and tools. On occasion, this employee may assume a lead worker role, in the absence of a supervisor. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor in the division assigned. Work is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and completion of assigned tasks in a safe and timely manner. Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Operates front-end loading equipment in the loading and transportation of sand, gravel, and dirt.

Operates asphalt roller, tack machine, paint machine, bucket truck, dump truck, bulldozer and skid steer.

Operates the motor grader in the maintenance of streets and other shaping and leveling work.

Operates the street sweeper on an established route requiring independence and reliability.

Operates mowing equipment, including bush hog, lawn mower, boom mower and weed eater to maintain grounds.

Operates camera for inspection of storm drains, pipes and basin boxes.

Operates automated garbage truck.

Sprays herbicide for weed control.

Prepares for funerals by operating a backhoe to dig graves and backfill after internment; repairs grave plots; moves and re-sets gravestones.

Operates a large tractor with a large side arm mower.

Operates a leaf truck while supervising a leaf collection crew; operates one-arm bandit.

Washes and cleans assigned equipment; performs routine servicing as needed.

Loads, transports and unloads daily materials, supplies, and equipment; takes inventory of materials upon receipt and return.

Assists in the cleanup of the assigned job site.

Performs duties of general maintenance work as assigned.

Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of operation of medium to large-size equipment.

Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to operate large equipment in heavy traffic.

Skill in the operation of large specialized equipment and tools used in the work assigned.

Ability to lead lower-level maintenance workers in the completion of assigned tasks, and possibly serve as a crew leader.

Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this position is very heavy work (exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, oils, and contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.

The position requires a valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License, completion of high school or equivalent, and some experience in the assigned area of responsibility, particularly the operation of motorized equipment. Depending on the division to which assigned, this position may require a commercial driver's license.
