Position: Alarm & Security Camera Technician serving Berkeley County Schools
Employment Term: Full-time / 261 days
Salary: Based upon the EPIC FY'24 Professional Pay Scale with verified education and experience
Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma, GED or equivalent required; associates degree and/or low voltage license preferred
  • Minimum five years' experience in the electronic security trade with knowledge of a variety of security, CCTV, fire, and access systems
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and telecommunication faults
  • Must have the ability to read floor plans
  • Must have the aptitude to read, understand, and apply knowledge from technical documents
  • Must understand system programming
  • Must understand low voltage systems and wiring
  • Must have familiarity with the proper use of volt/ohm meters, circuit toners and Telco/network connector termination tool
  • Must have familiarity with basic networking theory. (Assigning IP addresses, connecting network switches and routers)
  • Must have analytical ability to diagnose basic problems and ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Must be able to inspect installation sites and study work orders, building plans, and installation manuals in order to determine materials requirement and efficient installation procedures
  • Must remain up to date with industry licensing and testing requirements
  • Must be proficient in using a PC
  • Must be able to effectively use tools and equipment as provided
  • Must possess critical thinking skills and the ability to make decisions while under limited supervision
  • Must have familiarity with IP camera, DVR and alarm panel set up procedures using a laptop and vendor specific software
  • Must have competent use of basic hand tools and power tools including screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters, wire strippers, wrenches, drill bits, drills, impact drivers, saws, flashlight, Volt/Ohm meter, circuit toner, view cam for analog camera focusing, etc.

Position Overview: The selected candidate will serve as a Security Technician, primarily responsible for system maintenance, diagnosing equipment problems, making repairs, coordinating work of designated subcontractors, and instructing others in the use and operation of CCTV, electronic access control, security, fire, and similar systems. The work is to be performed according to manufacturers' technical information and standard service practices. The selected candidate will also be responsible for maintaining inventory control of all such equipment. Systems included in responsibilities include but are not limited to, access control, CCTV, security, and fire alarm systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Diagnoses security equipment problems using reference materials and computer software; replaces defective components, including replacing batteries and mechanical locking systems; and diagnoses security and fire system trouble signals.
  • Performs service and repair of alarm systems; tests equipment using volt ohm meters, amp/volt testers, computers, and watt meters.
  • Understands security systems projects and coordinates work with designated subcontractors in the performance of the installations ensuring the work is done to Berkeley County School (BCS) Specifications.
  • Trains employees on the use of equipment and security systems.
  • Communicates/coordinates with BCS staff for facility access issues.
  • Interacts with BCS staff in a professional manner, communicates needs to BCS maintenance department and contractors
  • Performs preventative maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Collaborates in new system design and configuration
  • Handles service calls
  • Maintains parts inventory
  • Prioritizes safety with high awareness of surroundings, people in the vicinity, and potential hazards
  • Completes other tasks and/or duties as required and/or assigned by the BCS Executive Director of Maintenance or the EPIC Administrator

  • Constantly required to operate standard office equipment as well as hand and power tools
  • Constantly required to reposition self in a variety of positions to access equipment and cabling
  • Constantly required to use visual acuity to observe, inspect, and analyze equipment, monitors, and screens
  • Constantly required to work in changing conditions both indoors and out
  • Frequently required to walk throughout work areas
  • Frequently required to move equipment up to 50 pounds throughout buildings and work sites
  • Frequently required to ascend/descend ladders to access equipment
  • Frequently required to enter confined spaces including closets and attics
  • Frequently required to work at heights, utilizing scaffold and lift equipment
  • Frequently required to communicate with staff and contractors demonstrating the ability to accurately exchange information

Work Environment: The work environment described here is representative of that which an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • This position is frequently conducted indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to heat/cold and inclement weather.
  • Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Employee is occasionally required to enter close quarters.
  • Employee is occasionally exposed to vibration and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is generally loud.

Conditions of Employment: Recommended by the EPIC Administrator; Confirmed by the EPIC Regional Council
Anticipated Start Date: Immediately following the onboarding process.
