Job description

The Department of Public Health is looking for an Environmental Toxicologist to join the team at the Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health (BCEH), who shall assist with a variety of essential toxicology-related research tasks and help to coordinate activities related to human health risk assessments in support of Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health priorities.

The Environmental Toxicologist will analyze data, assist with presentations at public meetings, prepare draft reports or other documents, and evaluate public health data, including analytical chemistry measurements of contaminants in environmental and human (biomonitoring) samples. They will also be responsible for assisting with project conducted under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), including completing health consultations to evaluate the potential health effects from exposure to environmental contamination at hazardous waste sites in Massachusetts. The individual shall represent DPH Bureau of Environmental Health at interagency or public meetings, some of which may occur during evenings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES (These duties and responsibilities are not all-inclusive):

  • Coordination of projects conducted under BCEH cooperative agreement with the US Agency for Toxic Substance Disease Registry (ATSDR), which may Include conducting reviews of environmental data for possible public health concerns.
  • Assistance with the management of large volumes of study data.
  • Assistance with environmental sample collection, which may include transportation of sampling supplies and / or of collected samples.
  • Administration of site inspections to identify potential environmental hazards and pathways of exposure.
  • Coordination of meetings with project staff and senior management.
  • Scientific literature reviews.
  • Evaluation of readily available toxicology data
  • Summarization of environmental exposure data and compare results to known toxicity thresholds and population background levels.
  • Representation of MDPH / BEH at required internal or external meetings on toxicology or related topics as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental science and public health.
  • Strong understanding of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in environmental science and public health.
  • Proficiency in mathematical computations used in solving environmental problems.
  • Familiarity with the methods used in the preparation of charts, graphs and tables.
  • Skill to prepare technical and general reports and to prepare and use charts, graphs, and tables.
  • Ability to work independently and to adapt to varying situations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Competence in working with statistical applications (SAS, R, etc.).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with established human health risk assessment methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the practice of regulatory toxicology and the development of health-based exposure criteria.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience In the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.


Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for the required experience.*
  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
