Overview:

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is hiring an early-career Environmental/Sustainability Planner to join our Watertown, MA office and support a wide variety of projects across our environmental planning practice. VHB is seeking a professional who has interest and experience in preparing environmental review documentation in accordance with the federal-level National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and state-level Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA), as well as other environmental studies for a diverse set of clients. This person will also be expected to support the team’s growing portfolio of sustainability and climate action planning projects, which range from high-level plans (e.g., net zero road mapping) to detailed technical analyses (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions accounting).

VHB’s overall environmental team provides a wide range of integrated services such as environmental permitting, sustainability and resiliency planning, urban planning, comprehensive master planning, solid waste management, air quality and noise studies, natural resource management, water conservation and water quality projects, historic resource planning, and community engagement. We are looking for applicants that have an interest in our full range of environmental services.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout VHB’s multidisciplinary practice, particularly within VHB’s Environmental Resources Department
  • Work with a team of planners and engineers on NEPA/MEPA and similar environmental reviews, as well as a variety of sustainability- and climate action-forward projects
  • Support data collection, management, and analysis
  • Support the development of memoranda, reports, and other project documentation
  • Support site visits and other field work
  • Support public and other stakeholder outreach
  • Use technical tools such as Esri’s ArcMap (GIS) and Microsoft Office

Skills and Abilities:

  • Self-motivated with attention to details and ability to think critically
  • Must be able to work both independently and as a part of project teams
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Understanding of NEPA, environmental planning, and sustainability planning is a plus
  • Familiarity with technical analyses and tools

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 0-1 year of planning experience, whether through coursework or professional experience
  • 1-3 years of planning experience, whether through coursework or professional experience preferred
  • BA in Planning or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Environmental Studies,
  • Urban Planning, Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Urban Transportation Planning)
  • M.S. degree a plus
