DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Department: Public Works
Division: Environmental Services
JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste including litter, trash, bulk items, and tires. Successful performance helps ensure the effective and efficient collection of solid waste and litter and enhances the city’s public image. The work consists of related duties in the collection and transportation of solid waste, litter, bulk waste, and tires. Heavy traffic and differing weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the work. weather conditions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Remove paper and litter from roadways and curbside.

  • Service containers (recycling or garbage) by removing containers from the curbside at houses or business locations and emptying the contents into the appropriate truck.

  • Remove limbs and yard waste from the curbside; collect trash, furniture and tires from the curb and gutter; transports collected material to the appropriate disposal site-transfer station, Arrow Road or Fleet Maintenance.

  • Assists in the completion of pre-trip and post-trip inspections,

  • Assists in the completion of documentation of completed daily activities.

  • Know equipment capabilities and perform daily and routine maintenance and inspections of assigned vehicles.

  • Clean assigned trucks and other assigned vehicles as necessary; performs basic maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE
  • Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • Work includes overtime as needed. May require work on City holidays or makeup days resulting from inclement weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS


  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level associated with the completion of a high school education or equivalent and possession of a High School Diploma or GED.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of solid waste disposal operations.

  • Knowledge of City ordinances policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and ordinances.

  • Knowledge of department policies, safety rules and state guidelines regarding solid waste collection.

  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and assigned collection routes and/or the ability to red and follow maps.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions at work.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

GUIDELINES
  • Guidelines include relevant state and federal laws and regulations, OSHA requirements, City policies and ordinances, Departmental/Division policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in their application.

CONTACTS:
  • Contacts are typically with Division personnel and residents of the City.

  • Contacts are typically to give or receive information, resolve service problems and provide services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Works is typically performed both in enclosed vehicles and outdoors.

  • Employee is exposed to noise, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals and odors.

  • Employee also works in different weather types-hot, cold or inclement weather.

  • Work requires the use of protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, hats and reflective vests.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Work is performed outdoors while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping.

  • Employee may be required to occasionally lift light or heavy objects, climb ladders or use tools or equipment which require a high degree of dexterity.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
  • The Crew Supervisor/Leader assigns works in terms of general instructions and spot checks for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature/propriety of the results.
