Primary Responsibilities
In the role of Environmental Scientist 2, we'll count on you to
  • Collect project-related data, which may include research, communicating with government agencies and clients, map reviews, and land use code interpretation.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers to prepare, plan and analyze/review technical studies, permit applications, and similar reports/documents for local, state, and Federal permitting efforts.
  • Provide input on strategic direction of permitting efforts.
  • Review mapping (GIS/CAD), studies and regulations, and assist in preparing environmental compliance documents
  • Conduct high-quality environmental reports, including assistance with preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments, and Categorical Exclusions.
  • Lead or assist HDR colleagues in ensuring regulatory compliance and completing permitting requirements.
  • Assist in preparation for and participation in public information meetings and hearings.
  • Plan or direct small to medium size tasks/projects supporting transportation, power, and water/wastewater projects.
  • Work under the direction of senior environmental staff on large infrastructure projects.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Natural Resources or closely related field
  • 5 years technical and/or field experience preparing environmental documents
  • Proficient with Adobe Acrobat and MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint)
  • Strong environmental writing and communication skills
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving and research abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with permitting and agency coordination in the Dakotas and Wyoming is referred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of permitting and NEPA processes in the Dakotas and Wyoming
  • Familiarity with wetland delineations, stream assessments, rare species surveys and habitat assessments a plus.
  • Demonstrated technical report writing background and familiarity with applicable federal and state environmental regulations, laws, and guidelines
  • ArcGIS or ArcPro experience, with the ability to evaluate GIS data and create maps for reporting and coordination
