ABOUT THE POSITION

Environmental Inspector - Hazardous Materials & Industrial Hygiene | Newark, NJ | Manasquan, NJ | New York, NY

VHB is seeking an Environmental Inspector for our growing Hazardous Materials and Industrial Hygiene team. This hire will be responsible for performing investigations, monitoring, and sampling of lead, mold, and asbestos related materials for our clients in NJ and NY. Majority of work and team you'd report into is in NJ but will consider NY applicants that have means to accommodate travel needs.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform asbestos, mold, lead, PCBs, and other Hazardous Materials surveys on institutional and commercial buildings
  • Monitor the abatement process and ensures that projects are completed on time and according to specifications
  • Communicates and reports project progress and conflicts
  • Liaises with clients, developers, architects, engineers, and other professionals
  • Organizes work schedules and delegates tasks
  • Conducts regular and final inspections to ensure the quality of work of abatement projects
  • Providing project monitoring and air sampling, including compliance with on-site field protocols such as chain of custody forms and daily logs
  • Preparing and reviewing project related reports
  • Leads site investigation and remediation studies
  • Manages and supports the preparation of environmental permitting and compliance documents
  • May attend meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to establish needs and discuss permitting and compliance issues
  • Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures are followed and that materials used conform to specifications
  • May participate in the development of quality control reports and procedures
  • Observes general job safety practices and may participate in the development of job safety practices and in the preparation of safety reports
  • Occasional travel to perform field work outside of NY and NJ area

 Skills and Attributes

  • Work in field and office settings
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently
  • Familiarity with contaminant transport and fate processes and associated human health and environmental risks preferred for site investigation & remediation practice
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including NEPA and CERCLA compliance
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team-oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented
  • Fundamental knowledge of construction and environmental processes

Qualifications

 

Required

  • High School diploma or GED
  • 5-8 years of fieldwork experience required (minimum of 2 years of environmental consulting experience involving inspections with asbestos, lead, mold, etc.)
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental, Industrial Hygiene, construction or related field of study preferred (not required, but may substitute for 1 year of field experience)
  • Current NYS Department of Labor (NYS DOL) Licensed Asbestos Inspector
  • Strong report writing, field coordination and task management skills
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record/must pass background check

Preferred

  • OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications
  • Current NYS Department of Labor (NYS DOL) Licensed Project Designer and/or Asbestos Project Monitor
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Industrial Hygiene, environmental science, biology, construction or related field of study
  • NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Asbestos Investigator
  • NYS DOL - Mold Assessor
  • NYS DOL - Asbestos Project Designer
  • EPA Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor - New York State Endorsement
  • SSPC (C3) - Lead Supervisor/Competent Person for Commercial Building/Superstructures

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City is $76,000-$94,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
