Purpose/ Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialists position is responsible for overseeing, monitoring, evaluating, and enforcing compliance replating to EHS, OSHA, EPA, CTDEEP and Workers’ Compensation regulations.

This role has no supervisory responsibilities.


Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist facilities & maintenance in the development and implementation of preventive & predictive maintenance programs emphasizing effective planning & scheduling for all equipment and facilities.
  • Enforces a safe jobsite and maintains compliance with company safety plans and OSHA requirements.
  • Manages and administers the Workers’ Compensation program.
  • Assist in the managing the controlled access and security to buildings.
  • Coordinates with regulatory agencies and contractors to ensure compliance with applicable codes, contractual requirements, and safety requirements.
  • Ensures all proper permits are acquired, adhered to, and inspected for all projects.
  • Ensures all areas are kept clean, organized, operational & safe for all team members, customers, and contractors.
  • Collaborates with Quality and EHS Departments to develop, manage, and maintain quality standards, safety standards, and optimal working standards.
  • Assists in creating Standard Operating Procedures (SPOs) and Work Instructions (WIs)
  • Administers and communicates company policies and procedures, and ensures the company complies with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develops, and conducts EH&S program training for new hires and annual training for existing employees.
  • Conducts Compliance Audits on a schedule.
  • Collects, manages, and enters EHS data into the electronic EH&S Management Systems as required.
  • Supports Corporate EHS requirements, training, meetings, and guidance.
  • Conducts and manages incident investigations including root cause analysis for corrective action.
  • Supports Corporate Sustainability goals and metrics and engages in improvement opportunities.
  • Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating EH&S policy, procedures/manuals in accordance with regulations and Corporate Programs.
  • Supports the update of all Regulatory Permits including Air, Water and Waste.
  • Prepares and submits annual EHS government reporting under the guidance of Corporate EHS personnel.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and updates regulatory plans.
  • Assures EHS inspections and records are current, accurate and valid.
  • Serves as contact with all federal, state, and local regulatory bodies.
  • Manages on- site regulated and non-regulated waste and recycled waste management.
  • Maintains waste holding and accumulation areas, including the transportation of waste to holding areas as required, coordinates pick up schedules with vendor, conducts inspections.

  • Assists with safety inspections, including fire panel, fire extinguisher and sprinkler systems inspections.

  • Conducts effective investigations into EHS incidents.

  • Develops and maintains effective and professional relationships with co-workers, agencies, compliance officers, inspectors, and key contacts outside the Company; works closely and effectively with corporate and external counsel.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and professional certifications where necessary in the areas of EHS regulations, facility maintenance, and state of the art processes and procedures to
  • achieve company objectives and goals.
  • Ensures corrective actions to address deficiencies and drive continuous improvement.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill & Ability:

  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state regulations and requirements governing EHS issues for industrial manufacturing (OSHA, EPA)
  • Advanced knowledge of facility and preventative maintenance functions and regulations with technical fundamentals of safety management, risk assessment and reduction, including
  • machinery safety, ergonomics, and occupational health.
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation regulations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to speak well, communicate ideas clearly, and be approachable and open to discussion.
  • Strong computer skills, and presentation skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects.
  • Advanced mathematical skills
  • Lean/Kaizen/Six Sigma/Green Belt continuous improvement skills
  • Leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to analyze, problem solve and find solutions to complex issues.
  • Ability to drive organizational change to meet business needs.


Education/Experience:

BA/BS degree in Facility Management, Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or a related field, and

3 to 5 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing setting EHS responsibilities.
