Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager
New Way Trucks

Reports to: Director of HR and EHS
Date: 12/20/2023

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible to create, manage, plan, and implement programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses. They develop accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies of organization. They are proactive and manage and coordinate safety activities throughout the assigned locations. Safety reaches across manufacturing and transportation functions in multiple locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Partners with local management and corporate HR/EHS to provide a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Provides leadership and builds/maintains an aligned culture of safety and compliance.
  • Recommends measures to protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Inspects or evaluates workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
  • Uses analytics and metrics to drive continuous improvement in EHS.
  • Manages environmental permits and associated training and action plans.
  • Develops or maintains hygiene programs, such as noise surveys, continuous atmosphere monitoring, or ventilation surveys.
  • Investigates accidents, injuries, and near misses to identify root causes and how such incidents will be prevented in the future.
  • Collect samples of dust, gases, vapors, or other potentially hazardous or toxic materials for analysis.
  • Investigate the adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, or other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.
  • Conducts safety training, educational programs, and demonstrates the use of safety equipment.
  • Collaborates with others to institute control or remedial measures for hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Provide new-employee health and safety orientations and develop materials for these presentations.
  • Complete and maintain OSHA statistics on behalf of the facility. Distribute OSHA and record keeping statistics as required in a timely manner.
  • Develop or maintain medical monitoring programs for employees.
  • Coordinate "right-to-know" programs regarding hazardous chemicals or other substances.
  • Maintain or update emergency response plans or procedures.
  • Inspect specified areas to ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first-aid supplies.
  • May order suspension of activities that pose threats to workers' health or safety.
  • Maintain inventories of hazardous materials or hazardous wastes, using waste tracking systems to ensure that materials are handled properly.
  • Maintain required record keeping and reporting for MDEQ and EPA compliance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Minimum education requirement Associates Degree or higher in a related field or equivalent related experience.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of EHS experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • EHS certification(s) a plus.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to lead without authority.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of production processes.
  • Ability to implement solutions after reviewing complex problems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Strong ability to interface with all levels of individuals within and outside the company.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents.
  • The ability to gather information to drive conclusions and action.
  • Ability to work at a desk, using computer, appropriate programs, and telephone.
  • Strong ability to analyze data, produce metrics, and provide recommendations based on data.
  • Physical ability to climb, crawl and to work in awkward positions such as kneeling, bending, stooping and overhead positions.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote safety in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, and agency rules regarding environmental, health and safety practices.
