Description
This position will be part of the Field Drilling/Grouting Observation team for a dam grouting project. Personnel in this position will be located at the project site in Concrete, Washington.
Field engineer will observe drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting activities; interpret subsurface conditions using cores, acoustic and visual televiewer data, water pressure test and grout data; and develop boring logs for grout holes.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform field observation of drilling, water pressure testing, and grouting operations in overburden, reservoir debris, and bedrock.
- Perform field observation of Contractor's geologist activities, which include rock core logging and televiewing of grout holes using optical and acoustic televiewers.
- Review rock cores and Contractor's drilling logs.
- Prepare daily field reports and other field documentation as requested.
- Perform job duties during day or night shifts at the project construction site in Concrete, Washington.
- Follow Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy.
- Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson's Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Qualifications
- BS in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering specialty) or Geological Engineering.
- 2 to 6 years of experience in Geotechnical or Geological Engineering.
- Engineer-in-Training Certificate
- Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds, traverse non-uniform terrain, and climb stairs and ladders.
- An interest in being on site for the construction and participating in a highly challenging state-of-the-art, technology-heavy, bedrock grouting project.
- On track to obtain Professional Engineering (PE) License.
- Work experience (and/or coursework) in one or more of the following areas: soil mechanics; rock mechanics; rock and soil slope stability; shallow and deep foundations; tunneling; microtunneling; seismic design; earthquake engineering; and retaining structures.
- Field/construction observation experience must include one or more of the following areas: logging geotechnical explorations, observation of pile driving operations, observations of earthwork activities, installation and recording of geotechnical instrumentation, field reconnaissance, and/or underground work.
- Candidates with the following experience are preferred. Those without this experience that are selected to work on the project will gain experience in the following areas during the project.
- Experience on pressure grouting, seepage cutoff, and dam safety projects preferred.
- Experience with packer testing in bedrock desirable.
- Experience with optical and acoustic televiewer data desirable.
- Experience with collection and interpretation of instrumentation data, including data from vibrating wire piezometers a plus.
Typically, depending on an applicants education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Professional I, II, III, or IV level.

An entry-level Geotechnical Engineer will be hired in as a Professional I, II, III, or IV.
- Professional I range: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00
- Professional II range: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00
- Professional III range: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00
- Professional IV range: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00
The pay range for this position depends on skills, education, and experience. In additional to base pay, all employees are also eligible for an annual year-end discretionary bonus. If an employee is exempt, they are eligible to accrue comp time in hours excess of 40 each week.
