Job description

Brown and Caldwell has an exciting job opportunity for a self-motivated geologist, hydrogeologist, or engineer to join our Florida team.  This is an exciting opportunity to work in a growth-oriented professional consulting office with a diverse technical staff of geologists, engineers, and scientists.  The selected candidate will work with and be mentored by strong, nationally recognized, senior staff working on a variety of environmental related projects. Primary responsibilities include performing inspection on a deep well injection project for a client in Fort Lauderdale, FL with a schedule of 7 days on / 7 days off with 12-hour shifts.

Detailed Description:

  • Position involves a high percentage of field work and some office responsibilities
  • Perform field data collection and documentation related to site investigations; observation of drilling operations; installation of monitoring and groundwater recovery wells or soil borings, installation of vapor probes; collection and field classification or soil and rock samples and conducting various field tests.
  • Other fieldwork may include groundwater and soil sampling, water-level measurements, aquifer testing, soil vapor sampling, borehole geophysical testing and other tasks as assigned.
  • Under the supervision of senior staff, perform technical evaluations to support remediating, planning, designing, and permitting related to in-situ or ex-situ environmental cleanups, water supply, aquifer recharge, storm water, and other environmental restoration
  • Assist with the preparation and interpretation of boring logs, hydraulic conductivity calculations and data entry of various field and analytical data
  • Provide data interpretation, including preparation of data maps, contour maps and cross-sections
  • Preparation of technical memoranda, compliance permits and report sections
  • Provide daily site inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, standards, and codes.
  • Become familiar with the project plans and specifications for enforcement of their requirements.
  • Coordinate in the field with contractors, third party inspectors, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Measure and record pay quantities.
  • Prepare daily reports documenting weather, equipment, manpower, and construction activities; and daily progress photos.
  • Document contractor’s schedule progress.
  • Document work not performed in accordance with the plans/specifications and advise the contractor’s superintendent and note in the daily report.
  • Prepare preliminary punch lists.
  • Prepare time and material reports.
  • Assist the contractor in scheduling required inspections.
  • Coordinate third-party special material testing inspections.
  • Review and provide input on potential change order issues.
  • Update digital photographic records.
  • Comply with company’s and client’s health and safety training requirements.
    • Coordinate field efforts; adhere to and assist with the development of work plans and health and safety plans

     

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • B.S. in Geology, Hydrogeology, or Engineering required, M.S. a plus; related degrees in physical science with knowledge of subsurface geology may be considered
    • Detailed understanding of geologic principles and general awareness of groundwater flow and environmental concepts
    • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, results-oriented, reliable, and able to work well with a wide variety of coworkers and subcontractors
    • Must be willing to work in the field year-round
    • Field assignments require ability to perform physically demanding work
    • Must be willing and able to work a 12-hour shift with a schedule of 7 days on, 7 days off, for the duration of the project which is expected to be approximately two years.
    • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification a plus
    • Candidates should have a strong desire and be motivated to obtain a Geologist-in-Training or Fundamentals of Engineering certification, followed by the Registered Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer licensure or equivalent licensure within 3-5 years
    • Excellent technical writing capabilities required
    • Must be proficient in using standard computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); experience with MS Project, MS Access, CADD, ArcGIS, and/or boring log software (such as gINT) a plus
    • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
    • Ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
    • Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, etc.
    • Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting critical construction operations (i.e. pouring concrete).
    • Ability to operate a BC Pickup Truck to commute to jobsites and to access work areas on site
    • Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified.
    • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 foot typically) to access structures for visual inspection.

     

    Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future.

    Location A:

    Salary: $57,000-$77,000

    Location B:

    Salary: $62,000-$85,000
