The Wethersfield District has one opening for an English Learners (EL) Teacher, K-6, at Hanmer Elementary School. The EL Teacher will work under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the school Principal. The EL Teacher will be responsible for providing direct EL instruction to students as well as overseeing the instruction, materials and implementation of the EL Program.

Compensation: $53,459-$105,923 (full-time annual)

Summary of Position: The EL teacher is TESOL (#111) certified, has demonstrated a high level of proficiency in teaching, and possesses a thorough knowledge of instructional strategies, child development, curriculum related to English Learners, and theory in new language acquisition. The successful candidate will steward the instruction, materials, and implementation of the EL program at a K-6 elementary school. In addition to providing direct EL instruction to identified students, this position will also require daily collaboration with the school-based EL tutor(s) (if applicable) , facilitating program scheduling, and administering student assessment through multiple measures of linguistic progress monitoring. Another primary function of the school-based EL teacher will be the coaching and modeling for classroom teachers of content-based Tier I EL classroom support through differentiated linguistic instructional strategies. The successful candidate additionally will be responsible for designing appropriate EL instruction and servicing plans for EL students entering SRBI and for those with Individualized Educational Plans. The successful candidate will work closely with the school-based special services team to adapt EL instruction through accommodations and modifications established in both consultation and PPT meetings. The successful candidate will collaborate frequently with district-level EL Coordinators to ensure school-based alignment with the established district-wide EL program, specifically with regard to the adopted EL curriculum, assessments, and staff development objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • School-based identification and screening of EL-eligible students, based on state and district guidelines;
  • School-based communication to parents of EL status (Initial/Continuing/Exiting);
  • Development of school-based ELL servicing schedule;
  • Implementation of the district EL curriculum based on grade and proficiency level;
  • Tier 1 and Tier 2 EL instruction;
  • Selecting and sharing modification/accommodations for school-based ELL students;
  • Collection and analysis of school-based EL performance data (curriculum-based and state assessments);
  • Assessment of ELs through curriculum-based, benchmark, and state proficiency testing;
  • Reporting of curriculum-based and assessment performance to students, classroom/support teachers, parents and principal;
  • Coaching of classroom teachers in the implementation of content-based Tier I classroom EL instructional strategies and development of EL awareness in school-based instructional stakeholders using current research, best practices, and materials;
  • Provides professional development to teachers individually, grade level groups, and collectively in faculty and staff meetings;
  • Attend school-based student consults, PPTs, and retention meetings;
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction;
  • This position has no evaluation responsibilities;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent or Principal.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to articulate specific knowledge of current theory, best practices, and student advocacy;
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills to lead teachers, parents, and members of the school community;
  • Ability to bring research-based insight to curriculum development in order to improve student achievement;
  • Knowledge of best practice in instruction and assessment;
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology resources into district curriculum;
  • Ability to read, interpret and summarize assessment results including standardized tests (including TELL, LAS Links, etc.);
  • Ability to author routine reports, analysis, and correspondence;
  • Ability to speak effectively and succinctly before administrators, staff, parents, and students;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form;
  • Ability to communally reinforce current instructional practices in and diffuse misconceptions surrounding ELs;
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies;
  • Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints;
  • Prior experience teaching in ESOL, bilingual, or dual language program(s) preferred;
  • Master's Degree in TESOL preferred but not required;
  • Multilingual proficiency is a strength but not required.
  • Must Possess TESOL Certification (#111), (Pre-K);

Compensation and Benefits:
Teachers are placed on the appropriate track and step of the teacher's schedule. Work year shall be teacher's work year as stated in contract.
