Job description

Position: Part-time Evening English Language Acquisition (ELA) Instructor
Term: 11 Months, approximately 9 hours per week
Classification: Certified
Location: AEL Learning Center, 123 S. Main Street, Joplin
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree required, must be able to attend pre-certification workshops. Must
possess strong language skills.
Supervisory: No
Reports to: Director of AEL, Director of FTC Adult Education

General Expectations:

  • Arrive to work and leave work at the time specified by supervisors and attend all required meetings pertinent to the position.
  • Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
  • Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties.
  • Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties.

Essential Functions:
  • Administer the TABE CLAS-E pre- and post-tests
  • Develop learning plans
  • Teach English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills
  • Work with students independently or in a group setting
  • Help students acquire Citizenship
  • Carry out all other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs.
  • Possess teaching and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to teach and control the behavior of students.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand or sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Conditions and Environment
The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess.*
* This position is intended for Adult Education Instructors. The individual who holds this position will generally be indoors in a normal classroom or skills lab environment with minimal exposure to temperature changes. Relatively free from unpleasant conditions.
