Position Summary:
The English as a Second Language Instructor position is a full-time faculty position that includes instruction, office hours and professional contributions to the college community to create an innovative and engaging learning environment.

The English as a Second Language Instructor position is a full-time faculty position that includes instruction, office hours and professional contributions to the college community to create an innovative and engaging learning environment.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) with emphasis on EAP (English for Academic Purposes) as the primary teaching responsibility.
- Hiring, mentoring, and scheduling of ESL Instructors
- Advising of ESL students and coordination/collaboration with International Student Advising office.
- Serve the English Department as ESL writing expert, and assist with blind grading and writing assessments for ESL courses
- Teach a diverse student body in daytime, evening, and if needed weekend classes in person; develop and teach online courses as needed.
- Syllabus writing, textbook selection, and curriculum planning and development
- Participate in program level learning assessment, which includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, collecting and submitting relevant data, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
- Work with other faculty and administrators in program marketing.
- Provide leadership in identifying trends and working with other faculty to develop new curriculum to address these trends.
- Participate in department, division, and general faculty meetings, applicable college committee activities, and other forms of College service.
- Remain current in academic or program discipline, including attending professional conferences, and maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
- Participate in college professional development activities and stay current in technological or pedagogical advances that promote student learning.
- Other duties as assigned.
Hours/Schedule:
- Teach a minimum of 15 credit hours during fall and winter semester
- On campus presence at least four days per week during the academic year
- Being a professional faculty member at Washtenaw Community College is a year-round responsibility which includes curriculum development, professional improvement and development, and other professional responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Earned Master’s degree from a regionally-accredited institution in TESOL, applied Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, OR master’s degree with minimum 18 graduate credits in TESOL required.
- Minimum two (2) years teaching experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching all skill areas of ESL, at all levels, high beginning to advanced.
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability to teach English composition.
- Successful community college teaching experience.
