Summary of Job Duties:
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is seeking to hire 2 counselors to support the 2023 Engineering Scholars Program (ESP) camp this summer at its campus, held June 11-17, 2023. UALR will provide you with parking, lodging, and meals to facilitate your attendance during the one week program. During the one week program, you will be required to stay on campus with the students and be on call at all times. As a ESP Counselor, your duties include, but are not limited to, observing all rules and regulations established for the ESP and campers and enforcing such rules, monitoring student behavior and adherence to the dress code, recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving with the students, providing opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns, and supervising students during meals. In addition, you will be required to promote student participation in evening program activities, observe student behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques, report behavior and other problems immediately to the Program Director, and observe students daily for illness and/or injuries. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school education and at least two years of college courses;
  • Good customer service skills;
  • Must be able to reside on campus in campus housing for the entirety of the program;
  • Must have experience working with middle and/or high school students;
  • Must be able to work with minors and respond to emergency issues on campus;
  • Will not hold other employment for the duration of this assignment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in counseling, social work, summer camps/programs and/or housing and residence life;
  • A degree in counseling, school counseling, social work, or education;
  • Possess an Arkansas Educator Licensure or Arkansas School Counselor Certification.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Observing all rules and regulations established for the ESP and campers and enforcing such rules;
  • Monitoring student behavior and adherence to the dress code;
  • Recognizing and responding to opportunities for problem solving with the students;
  • Providing opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns;
  • Supervising students during meals;
  • Required to promote student participation in evening program activities;

  • Report behavior and other problems immediately to the Program Director; Observe students daily for illness and/or injuries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General skills knowledge of Computers including but not limited to Google Docs, Google Sheets, and email skills;
  • Ability to complete assigned duties individually and with strict deadlines;
  • Ability to accomplish assignments without constant supervision;
  • Ability to work as a team player;
  • Knowledge of STEM Summer Programs, University, and Campus Living policies;
  • Ability to multi-task with projects on changing schedules;
  • Ability to climb stairs;
  • At all times, act as a positive representative of the University, and abide by all policies and regulations.
