Job Summary: The Engineering Researcher II oversees engineering research projects and assumes responsibility for the day-to-day activity supporting project. Makes significant contributions to the planning and design of research and creative projects. Assists in short- and long-term planning and project goals. May assist with research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings.

Additional Department Summary: The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department seeks an Engineering Researcher II to lead and support research projects in the area of power electronics with a focus on emerging wide band-gap semiconductors. The position will report to Dr. Andy Lemmon and perform high-level research with faculty in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Research functions include but are not limited to leading teams in the design and execution of experimental procedures, the creation and evaluation of simulation models for power electronic systems, and the creation of publication and other research collateral. This position will also collaborate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students from varied academic and research units across the University and external organizations, including external sponsors.
This position will lead and support research programs in the area of power electronics within the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Specific job responsibilities will include leading collaborative teams in (1) the design, development, and fabrication of prototype power electronic converters utilizing emerging wide band-gap semiconductors; (2) the design and execution of experimental procedures in a research laboratory setting; (3) the collection, post-processing, and analysis of data from experimental procedures or simulation models; (4) the generation of technical reports, scholarly publications, and research proposals; and (5) the development of simulation models for both power electronic converters and semiconductor devices. Additionally, this position will provide direction and guidance to graduate research assistants in the performance of their research duties. This position may lead and support multiple research projects; any of which may include conducting experiments, analyzing data, and assisting with writing research proposals, technical papers and research reports.
This position will also have laboratory safety responsibilities that will include developing and ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures. Laboratory responsibilities may require physical activities related to experiment setup and teardown. The successful applicant must be willing and able to take advantage of educational and training opportunities to remain proficient and up to date with the state-of-the-art technology to support leading edge research.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering; OR Ph.D. in a closely related engineering field with some research experience in power electronics.
Candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment.

Skills and Knowledge: Excellent electronics and mechanical skills. Ability to lead teams consisting of faculty, staff, and students. Ability to work independently with limited or no supervision. Ability to lead and supervise experiments in the laboratories, train students in the use of equipment, and to design, construct, and operate experimental hardware.
Expertise with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, impedance analyzers, signal generators. Expertise with semiconductor characterization equipment including curve tracers. Expertise with device and circuit modeling using SPICE tools. Expertise with the design of printed circuit boards (PCBs), power electronic converters, and gate-drive circuitry for power semiconductors.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in the development of power electronic applications or the development of packaging for power devices and applications.
