The Manager, Engineering Operations - Strategy will lead a key team that oversees engineering planning, equipment reliability, manufacturing IT, and technical engineering support for a variety of process automation hardware, software applications, and laboratory equipment to support smooth lab operations. Working cross-functionally with Operations, Development, and Software groups, they will drive robust equipment and automation operations with the leadership of a team of talented engineers. The successful candidate will come with a proven track record of working in matrix organizations, owning complex systems/processes, implementing new technologies, as well as implementing continuous process improvements in a regulated operations setting.  GRAIL’s testing volumes are scaling fast and require a dynamic and detail-oriented leader to help deliver our revolutionary test to as many people as possible.
Expected schedule is on-site Monday to Friday.  This position requires on-call duty and needs to support weekends and holidays.  Alternative locations and work arrangements could be considered for the right individual.
Responsibilities
  • Manage a technical team of engineers with diverse scientific and technical skills required to support, troubleshoot, and improve complex automation systems in a regulated environment.
  • Provide guidance to ensure the team’s success in delivering high-quality technical solutions.
  • Establish and execute a strategic engineering plan aligned with the company’s overall goals and objectives.
  • Drive equipment reliability best practices.
  • Manages equipment and spare parts upgrades and obsolescence.
  • Owns and sustains Engineering Operations technical knowledge.
  • Plan and manage GRAIL’s equipment maintenance program and ensure service contracts requirements and responsibilities are clearly defined and established in collaboration with legal, quality, procurement, and operations to ensure service level agreements are met.
  • Drive and manage engineering initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness, with a focus on scalability and sustainability.
  • Manage equipment software lifecycle and drive changes to ensure reliable operations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of technical solutions.
  • Collaborate with regional teams to implement standardized processes and best practices across GRAIL.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains across Engineering Operations.
  • Make time sensitive technical decisions.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of technical support and process improvements.
  • Serve as a technical authority, staying abreast of industry trends and advancements.
  • Support the timely handling of investigations, impact assessment, Change Controls, NCRs, deviations, and CAPAs.
  • Establish operational objectives and work plans, delegate and empower team members to maximize the system up time for 24x7 operations
  • Participate, be a role model, and adhere to GRAIL’s policies and guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of related experience with a BS/BA or higher degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Life Sciences or equivalent work experience.  Engineering degrees are preferred.
  • Previous managerial experience in a similar work environment. Experience managing multiple sites is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead, coach, build, lead, and mentor engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills to work as a leader and provide internal customer support.
  • Excellent time management skills to support a fast paced working environment.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills in both hardware and software.
  • Strong experience with writing and implementing test protocols and procedures.
  • Strong industrial, electrical, and mechanical knowledge.
  • Knowledge of IT networking and systems infrastructure.
  • Experience executing within a computerized maintenance/calibration management system.
  • Knowledge Safety Training, lock out tag out (LOTO), Hazardous material, and waste handling.
  • Strong hands-on experience in technical troubleshooting and maintenance in regards to liquid handling equipment.(e.g., Agilent, Hamilton, Labcyte, Illumina etc.)
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Manufacturing Management Systems(MES), scheduling software, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, Green Button Go (GBG)
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience working with Illumina NGS technology platforms.

Physical Demands/Working Environment
Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, or wear safety gear.
Must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds.
Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Travel up to 20% of the time
