Job description

Summary Statement
The State of Delaware Department of Transportation Summer Internship Program provides engineering students with training to accompany their classroom knowledge. Under direct supervision, students will perform various duties that are directly related to their academic major. For approximately 12 weeks, Engineering Interns will work in an area of interest that may include any of the transportation engineering specialties. Positions will be located in Kent, Sussex and New Castle counties. The length of an internship is approximately 12 weeks.
Essential Functions
Engineering Area of Interest:
Active Transportation and Community Connections - This section promotes walking and bicycling as a healthy, economical, and environment-friendly alternative to driving, planning and designing projects including sidewalks, shared-use paths, and streetscape improvements.
Bridge Design - This section is primarily responsible for the design and review of bridge projects including new bridges, reconstructed bridges, and rehabilitation work.
Bridge Management - This section is responsible for the analysis of DelDOT's bridge inventory in developing an asset management plan to keep our bridges in a state of good repair.
Construction - This section is primarily responsible for administering projects in construction which includes the construction of new roadways and bridges the reconstruction of existing roadways and bridges.
Development Coordination - This section reviews traffic impact studies, entrance plans, and off-site improvement plans relating to land development proposals and manages the state's Corridor Capacity Preservation Program.
Engineering Support - The section is responsible for developing Standard Construction Details and Specifications, e-construction and project controls, Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) resources, and conducting post construction and ADA compliance inspections among other duties.
Maintenance & Operations - This section is responsible for keeping the State's multi-modal transportation network in a state of good repair through the careful and consistent application of personnel, equipment, and financial resources.
Materials & Research - This section is primarily responsible for the review, testing, and approval of materials used on DelDOT projects.
Project Development - The Project Development North Section is responsible for the designing road improvement projects, including documentation of a project's Purpose and Need, alternatives analysis, public involvement, and development of engineering design plans.
Right of Way - This section has many responsibilities, but engineers in this group develop right-of-way plans and work with utility companies on utility relocation efforts related to DelDOT projects.
Traffic - The DelDOT Traffic Sections are comprised of 2 main sections (Traffic Operations and Traffic Engineering). They are responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of traffic control and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices on state-maintained roadways.
Water Resources - This section is responsible for the design and review of all Department projects to ensure it remains compliant with the Stormwater and Erosion & Sediment Control elements of the Federal and State regulations as well as the State of Delaware's drainage requirements.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Engineering Internship Students
Be at least 18 years of age or older.
Have completed their freshmanyear seeking their Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Construction/Environmental Engineering.
Maintain at least a 2.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Additional Posting Information
Internship students are paid on an hourly basis and may be in full-time or part-time work status. Benefits, earned leave, or paid holidays are not associated with this job title. Salary information will be discussed during interviews.
