Position Summary
The Teaching Laboratory Engineer in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Columbia University (SEAS) will be primarily responsible for managing assigned duties and projects and assisting in the operation of both the Biomedical Engineering Teaching Lab, and shared spaces in the Department of Biomedical Engineering: biology lab, makerspace, machine shop, microscopes, freezers, and other equipment.
- Oversee assigned engineering projects in the BME Teaching Laboratory
- Oversee and track assigned capital equipment inventory
- Responsible for assigned budgets within the Teaching Lab budget, tracking and reporting expenses
- Supervise students using the BME Teaching Lab, ensuring safe and orderly usage of the space
- Provide guidance and mentorship of students on the fabrication of their projects and exploring engineering solutions
- Train students on the usage of the equipment in the space
- Maintain and upkeep of the Teaching Lab equipment and Department shared equipment
- Maintain access control within the Morningside Campus
- Provide technology support for equipment throughout the department
- Assist the Lab Manager in the day-to-day operation of the Teaching Lab
Responsibilities
- (15%) Oversee assigned engineering projects in the BME Teaching Laboratory. Oversee and track assigned capital equipment inventory and related assigned budgets.
- (25%) Maintain the Teaching Lab equipment and overall tidiness: preventive maintenance of 3D printers and laser cutter, tool and material stock tracking, calibration, and functionality inspection of electronics prototyping equipment, proper waste and equipment disposal
- (20%) Supervise students using the BME Teaching Lab, ensuring safe and orderly usage of the space. Provide guidance and mentorship for students on the fabrication of their projects and exploring engineering solutions, particularly students working on design-related coursework
- (10%) Provide support for Junior Lab course: setup of experiments, maintenance of related equipment, troubleshooting and developing experiments if necessary (in coordination with the Lab Lecturer)
- (10%) Research and development of new technologies beneficial to the Teaching Lab and Department
- (5%) - Proactive maintenance and monitoring of Department shared equipment spaces: freezers, BSCs, chemical hoods, incubators, mechanical loaders, microscopes, etc...
- (5%) - Coordinate departmental efforts in complying with EPA and OSHA requirements, and serve as E&HS contact point.
- (5%) - Provide technology support (hardware and software) for platforms and equipment used at the Department, including platforms for online education, and audiovisual equipment.
- (5%) Other related duties
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working in a fabrication or laboratory space.
Experience with 3D printing
Experience with CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, or similar)
Experience with electronics (for example: circuitry, controls, Arduino)
Excellent communication and organization skills
Ability to work effectively with different audiences and multiple projects/tasks
Knowledge/experience with office software (MS Office, Excel)
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in biomedical engineering or biomedical devices
- Experience with working with students
- Experience with CNC machining
- Experience with coding
