GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position serves as the agency's hydrogeologic expert in Cheyenne, WY. Enjoy all that historic Cheyenne has to offer! ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Investigate and quantify the availability of groundwater resources.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of aquifer-test data including calculating aquifer parameters and evaluating data for anomalies (boundary conditions, etc.).
  • Review and perform hydrogeologic modeling.
  • Provide hydrogeologic expertise to the agency.
  • Provide professional technical support in resolving groundwater disputes within the State.
  • Provide expert-witness testimony at hearings before the State Engineer, Ground Water Control Area Advisory Boards, or other entities.
  • Evaluate hypothetical impacts; respond to, and resolve concerns related to groundwater development.
  • Evaluate hydrogeologic and stratigraphic data.
  • Collect field data, analyze, interpret, and prepare reports on site specific hydrogeologic conditions.
  • Process groundwater applications and related water rights documents.
  • Conduct field inspections for adjudications and write proofs.
  • Present the results of hydrogeologic investigations to appropriators, Control Area Advisory Board Members, and legal counsel.
  • Coordinate groundwater investigations involving the State Engineer's Office, Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Geological Survey, and/or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Evaluate geologic data to determine production intervals of groundwater-production and monitoring wells.
  • Understand and evaluate geologic materials and their ability to store and transmit groundwater.
  • Manage the review, analysis, evaluation and interpretation of technical groundwater data obtained from the Ground Water Division's monitoring well network.
  • Lead other geologists/staff in investigating, collecting, and analyzing hydrogeologic data.
  • Independently evaluate hydrogeologic reports submitted to the agency.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of the current principles of geology.
  • Knowledge of advanced hydrologic and hydrogeologic concepts.
  • Knowledge of the groundwater industry, specifically water well drilling and completions.
  • Knowledge of geologic/hydrogeologic and scientific principles and/or engineering analysis to effectively analyze problems and/or situations involving activities that may impact groundwater quality and quantity.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers for word processing, database and spreadsheet application, and querying and mapping from GIS databases.
  • Knowledge of analytical/numerical groundwater modeling techniques, including familiarity with the United States Geological Survey's MODFLOW.
  • Ability to design aquifer tests and evaluate aquifer-test data to determine aquifer parameters.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and also verbally to large and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, prioritize workload, resolve conflicts, and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to travel, complete fieldwork, and traverse rough terrain while carrying equipment.
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret geophysical well logs.
  • Ability to independently communicate and coordinate with project stakeholders including private citizens, corporations, and other state and federal regulatory agencies.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor's Degree (in Geology/Geotechnical Engineering)
Experience:
1-3 years of progressive work experience in Geology with acquired knowledge at the level of a Project Geologist
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Professional Geologist License (PG) or Professional Engineering License (PE) required at time of hire. (Wyoming PG or PE required within six months of hire date.)


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position may require some travel, as well as the ability to hike, lift, wade, snowmobile, and driving all-terrain vehicles, and work in unpredictable and inclement weather conditions in remote areas.
