POSITION DESCRIPTION/ PURPOSE: Assists in the care of all GI and Pain Management

patients. Assists in the preparation of patients and the performance of endoscopic or

pain procedures. Assists with the maintenance and use of equipment and supplies.

Takes responsibility for professional and development by attending staff in-services,

seminars, and conferences. Demonstrates willingness to perform additional or

delegated tasks or responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/ GED

Completion of medical assistant, nursing assistant, or other healthcare program

One-two years of experience in gastroenterology setting preferred. BLS certification

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical

1) Assists with the delivery of directing nursing care to patients under the

supervision of a registered nurse.

2) Assists in verifying patient’s name, date of birth, and type of procedure.

3) Assists with placing blood pressure cuff, sensor for pulse oximeter, ECG leads,

nasal cannula, and grounding pad.

4) Documents on patient call-back forms as required.

5) Assists with endoscopic/pain procedures under the supervision of a physician.

a. Assists with position of patient during the procedure.

b. Assists with collection of specimens during the procedure.

6) Assists with patient education under the supervision of a registered nurse.

7) Makes post-procedure follow-up telephone calls to patients.

8) Demonstrates a cooperative nature with physicians and nurses while responding

to the needs and requests of patient.

Technical

9) Prepares rooms, equipment, and supplies to accommodate the patient load for

the day.

9) Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instruments/equipment according to

manufacturer’s recommendations.

10) Assists with ordering and maintenance of supply inventory.

11) Assists in care and preparation of endoscopy specimens.

12) Understands operation, function and handling of equipment according to

manufacturer’s recommendations.

13) Communicates effectively; demonstrates teamwork and provides exceptional

quality and service.

a. Maintains an open and positive communication with nursing personnel

and other health professionals.

b. Communicates with patients, families, and/or significant others.

c. Maintains confidentiality of patients and personnel information.

d. Participates in continuing education programs.

e. Participates in risk management and quality assurance activities.

f. Performs other duties as required within the capacity of knowledge and

experience.

g. Works collaboratively with business staff, clinical staff, and physicians.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Normal endoscopy and pain management environment with exposure to

chemical odors, cleaning solvents, and other hazardous materials. Must follow

established procedures to ensure safety.

2. Exposure to work with electrical equipment which requires care and following

proper safety procedures.

Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to Hepatitis

and HIV, this position is described as Category I. This means that this position has

exposure to blood and bodily fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions

identifying risks and appropriate barrier protection.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by

an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand,

use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and

arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and is occasionally required

to sit.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Must be able to push, pull, manipulate, and lift patient weight up to 350 pounds with

assistance. Wears lead apron (10-15lbs). Specific vision abilities required by this job

include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to

adjust focus
