Major Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates, monitors and evaluates plans designed to identify, evaluate, and alleviate risks in the Environment of Care (EC) that may adversely affect the life and/or health of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Develops and coordinates training programs and protocols for employees in the areas of awareness (preparedness), mitigation, response and recovery. This includes oversight of the hospital based Patient Decontamination program.
  • Conducts onsite environmental tours and inspections to identify vulnerabilities and potential hazards by applying both principles of risk and safety management and emergency preparedness planning and response.
  • Works closely with the agency and/or external representatives having jurisdiction on safety related inspections by accompanying them on tours and actively participates in any required corrective action.
  • Monitors compliance with TJC (The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Services), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), and other city, state and federal regulations as they relate to emergency preparedness and environment of care. Works with management in following up and correcting identified concerns and compliance issues.
  • Identifies and collaborates with site leadership/staff to develop site emergency readiness plans to include training, equipment needs, communication needs, facility needs and other issues as identified.
  • Serves as a resource and liaison with external markets/agencies such as Public Health, WHEPP (Wisconsin Hospital Emergency Preparedness Program), city, county and state emergency management, as it relates to emergency preparedness. Serves as an emergency management liaison to assigned facilities to ensure consistency in emergency preparedness planning, exercise development and equipment selection.
  • Chairs the EC safety committee and completes/maintains all required documents (i.e. committee minutes, risk assessments, management plans, annual evaluations, and other communications with administration and staff). Assists in the application for hospital funding through state sponsored initiatives.
  • Prepares reports to site administrators or regulatory agencies as required. Provides information and analyzes data allowing management/staff to evaluate key issues, identify opportunities for improvement, and take preventive measures as needed.
  • Reviews, develops and implements safety and emergency preparedness policies and procedures while following regulation standards in collaboration with leadership.
  • Creates strong and effective partnerships with Emergency Department and hospital leadership. Utilizes a collaborative/participative approach to identify "best practice", to improve EMS program service outcomes, strategic planning and goal achievement.
  • Ensures that all EMS program goals/objectives are fully met.
  • In cooperation with the EMS medical director, standardizes program operations, education, protocols, budgeting, equipment, medical direction and policies/procedures to ensure that EMS program services are provided in a consistent, high quality manner.
  • Under the direction and approval of the EMS Medical Director will maintain a presence in the field to provide on-scene medical direction, assess compliance to protocols and policy, observe the quality of patient care, and be a resource, medical provider, and teacher. Skill competencies will be evaluated and approved by the EMS medical director.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate license issued by the state of Wisconsin, preferred
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic license issued by the state in which the team member practices. preferred
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Intermediate (NREMT-Intermediate) certification issued by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), preferred
  • EMS Instructor I certification issued by the State of Wisconsin needs to be obtained within 18 months, preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA),
  • A valid drivers license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or related field.

Experience Required:
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in safety, environment of care, and emergency preparedness.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • EMS instructor coordinator certification required or able to obtain.
  • Wisconsin Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required for Paramedics.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin EMS System components, statues, codes, guidelines, technical college system and EMS education.
  • Experience demonstrating leadership skill, initiative and personal management.
  • Strong Microsoft software skills including: PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Knowledge of modern telecommunications equipment including data and telemetry transmission.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including decision making, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.
  • Planning, physician relationships, project management and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have acceptable driving record according to Aurora policy and standards.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Must have speaking and hearing abilities to communicate/instruct class.
  • Position requires travel. May be exposed to weather and road hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
