Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The EMS Captain is a non-exempt role providing an oversight and direction of daily County EMS operations while staffing an ALS unit. They provide direct leadership, coaching, education and supervision of their assigned team. They are required to maintain operational readiness of assigned vehicles, medical equipment, supplies and post to ensure an efficient 911 response. The supervisor role reviews EMS electronic Patient Care Reports for QA/QI measures and will recommend operational needs to their administration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

  1. Ensures patient and employee safety in all areas of operations;
  2. Cooperates with Federal, State, and other local departments/agencies in search, rescue, and medical emergency situations;
  3. Respond to emergency calls, may assume command of scene operations and control responsibilities as necessary;
  4. Respond to non-emergency calls to assist the public and other response agencies, taking appropriate action to minimize the loss of life and/or property;
  5. Follows departmental mission statement; core values and applicable departmental polices, rules and regulations.
  6. Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA laws and regulations;
  7. Maintain current knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, and regulations related to aspects of EMS;
  8. Maintain positive working relationship with hospitals, medical professionals and staff, law enforcement, public works, fire, and other agencies in Pottawatomie County and surrounding areas;
  9. Must have and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.


EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent to a High School diploma required. An Associate's Degree is preferred. Five years' experience as a paramedic required. Three years' experience as a Paramedic is preferred. Three years of leadership/supervisory experience is preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course completion card from the American Heart Association is preferred within 6 months of hire or job transfer date.
  • BLS Healthcare Provider course completion card from the American Heart Association is required within 45 days of hire or job transfer date.
  • Driver License from the state of Kansas or Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Licensed Paramedic by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services (KSBEMS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification preferred within 6 months of hire.

Must have and maintain a clean driving record for this position. A "clean" record is defined as: No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (such as but not limited to DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents that are less than five (5) years old; no more than two (2) traffic infractions (such as but not limited to speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one year old.
