Job Summary This position provides both clinical and administrative services as Nurse/Practice Manager in Employee Health Services (EHS). In addition to the clinical aspects of the nurse manager, the incumbent is also responsible for the practice management of the clinic. This Nurse/Practice Manager is responsible for coordinating the operational and clinical aspects of the practice. EHS is in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety (OES). With a focus on the OES vision to create an environment where it is equally safe to work as it is to receive healthcare, partner with those who support or provide patient care in a matter that protects human health. The Nurse/Practice Manager is expected to provide visionary leadership in support of the OES vision, maximize the effectiveness of all service delivery systems and financial performance, and to cultivate a practice culture responsive to the health care environment. The incumbent is also responsible for program innovation and updates to current practice and implements short and long range strategic plans for EHS taking into account the Medical Center mission and state and federal regulations/laws.#M234
Daily person-to-person contact with UCD employees (EHS patients), students, residents, faculty, volunteers, clinic staff, nursing staff with regards to implementation of patient care, procedure, policies of EHS/UCDH, including pertinent patient education. Communication skills to be able to compose letters/memos effectively and present/teach information to large groups. Ability to interact effectively and establish cooperative working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside of the University.
Responsible for participating and reinforcing compliance to implementation of policies addressing regulations, procedures, and guidelines listed. Assist by providing input into recommended changes to existing policies. Assist by providing input into development of new Standardized Procedures and/or EHS policies.
Responsible for the collection of quality assurance data as it relates to various functions or medical surveillance programs. Reviews monthly activity reports keeps medical surveillance current and makes changes accordingly when programs change. Ensures conversions are reported to Infection Control and quarterly reports including bloodborne pathogen compliance. Makes recommendations to present safety device changes in order to reduce BBP exposures and maintain core values of the Sharp Safety law enacted in 2000.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • Minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. In addition, Master's degree required in nursing or other related field. If currently in a Master's degree program, must complete and graduate within three years.
  • Minimum of 2 years' of nursing management experience required
  • Experience and skills in using but not limited to employee record systems, human resources systems, databases, Microsoft Suites etc.
  • Strong leadership and critical thinking skills to resolve complex clinic/resources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects and potential toxicity especially related to vaccines administered or medications dispensed for prophylaxis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the disease processes of screening techniques for and prevention of tuberculosis, hepatitis, rubella, measles, varicella, HIV, and other infectious diseases as applicable to hospital Employee Health
  • Knowledge and skill to perform venipuncture and phlebotomy
  • Familiarity with Title 22 and JCAHO regulations and standards
  • Skill in performing CPR and Code Blue. Skill in aseptic parenteral administration of medication and skin testing techniques..
  • Ability to train and test employees for N95 fit testing.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and skills in patient/employee care. Ability to obtain patient's history and follow-up approved standardized procedures and protocols. Ability to develop, coordinate and conduct medical surveillance programs.
  • Knowledge of State laws, CDC recommendations, OSHA regulations and hospital policies and procedures regarding hospital Employee Health. Knowledge of legal parameters of and requirements for a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language and utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and health care colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising in a clinical capacity is preferred.
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) preferred or obtained within two (2) years of employment.
  • Knowledge of UCDH Policy and Procedure Manuals, Nursing-Standards Manuals, EHS Clinic policies, EHS Standardized Procedures, CNA Contract Administration manuals, California Vocational and Registered Nurse Practice Acts. All are reviewed and updated at least annually.
  • Ability and skill to proficiently operate the EHS computer system; gather, analyze, and interpret data. Ability to review history of old EHS system vs Agility system used and how programs function and interface with PeopleSoft and EMR/ Registration and web-based applications. Must be able to trouble shoot software used and to give access or delete access to managers for web-based programs EHS supports.
Department Description
Employee Health Services (EHS) provides over 44,000 patient visits a year between employees, volunteers, medical students and affiliated students. EHS provides support and services to the Occupational (Workers' Compensation) Clinic that sees approximately 500 patients a year. Collaborates with others in the Department of OES in order to maximize the health and safety of our employees, including Workers' Compensation and Environmental Health & Safety. To facilitate the management of the clinical and practice, the incumbent possesses broad spectrum knowledge of pathophysiology, nursing theory, billing, reports, staffing and provides leadership to the unit. There is complexity of services the incumbent must provide which requires the clinical knowledge necessary to safely provide care for such programs as Bloodborne Pathogens, TB surveillance and exposure, latex, immunizations including by not limited to Hep B, Flu, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and other mandated surveillances and surveillances for air transmissible diseases with follow up. May be called upon to provide orientation lecture regarding services provided by EHS including Worker's Compensation, injury management and basic infection prevention practices to new hospital staff. Develops and implements short and long range strategic plans for EHS, in alignment with OES.
EHS interfaces with many departments: Environmental Health & Safety, Workers Compensation, Infection Prevention, Nursing, Clinical Epidemiology, Lab, Radiology, Physical Therapy, and the PCN's. Must have knowledge of State law's and CDC recommendations. The incumbent shares in the development of the Standardized Procedure Manual on a yearly basis and adds or deletes as changes occurs. Make changes to Hospital Policies. Responsible for hospital policies within the EHS scope and is a reviewer for multiple other policies/department utilizing the expertise of this position.
