Description
The fellowship is a twelve-month program designed to jumpstart the career of an early career professional at a time when local journalism is both increasingly vital and threatened. The fellow will also help create journalism that is representative of the communities we serve, while demonstrating PBS AND CPM's values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.
The Emerging Journalist Fellow will be placed with our news team, focusing on general assignment news reporting, working on stories with quick deadlines, but also with the opportunity to work on planned coverage. The fellow will also work with journalists throughout the editorial team, developing additional skills in audio and video storytelling, as well as audience engagement. Through this work, the fellow will gain a better understanding of the collaborative process required to produce compelling and impactful journalism across various media.

Salary: $22.00-$22.00/hour
Location: Seattle - Must live in WA State, hybrid schedule that requires days onsite each week with other days remote

Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
  • Pitch story ideas to the News Editor on a weekly basis
  • Produce written content on a regular basis, which will include news briefs, short news stories and narrative features
  • Assist and shadow other journalists in the production of original enterprise journalism
  • Join regular planning and development meetings
  • With guidance from manager, work with the editorial staff and others to help identify potential audio and video storytelling opportunities.
  • Participate in training sessions
  • Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of CPM
  • Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time, with or without notice

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Proven interest in and basic understanding of journalism.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  • A proven and demonstrated understanding of journalistic ethical standards and practices
  • Ability to understand, relate to and communicate the perspectives of diverse communities, historically disadvantaged populations or economically marginalized communities or individuals. Experience living or working with diverse communities is highly desired.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Degree in Journalism, Communication or Creative Writing OR related field experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; some experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems
  • Working knowledge of word processing platforms
  • Working knowledge of AP style

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  • Ability to type on a keyboard for long periods of time
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
