Job description

*Position is budgeted at $26.08 hourly commensurate with related education and experience

Provides professional servicing of specialized apparatus and operates mobile repair unit which travels within Santa Fe County providing routine maintenance and repairs, emergency repairs and road service for all Santa Fe County fire and rescue equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance program for all vehicles; diagnoses and makes routine and emergency repairs as required and requested by each department.
  • Performs minor repairs to complete overhauls of gas and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, differentials and cooling systems used in a broad range of equipment used by the County emergency services; makes minor repairs to fire pumps, PTO's, hydraulic and pneumatic systems; diagnoses and repairs vehicles' electrical systems, including those with extensive specialty circuits; submits oil samples for analysis.
  • Acts as mediator between department personnel and repair shops, including describing repairs and parts needed, obtaining quotes from shops and monitoring progress of the repairs.
  • Completes purchase requisitions and maintains cost records.
  • Maintains service records on all vehicles, ascertains and makes note of the preventative maintenance history of each vehicle; takes steps necessary to bring all vehicles up to a current preventative maintenance status; prepares a preventative maintenance schedule for each vehicle, based on a six-month service schedule; sets the schedule of services and emergency repairs; and performs annual vehicle and apparatus inspections and tests.
Knowledge/ Skills:
  • Considerable knowledge of all phases of vehicle repair and modification; of fire service specialty equipment, pumps, electrical systems, phase invertors, and/or willingness and ability to learn same.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and technical manuals and to operate test equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel and the public.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations; to display self-motivation and dedication to the quality maintenance and repair of Emergency Vehicles according to nationally recognized standards and manufacturers specifications; to travel with in New Mexico and out of state, as required; and to attend specialized training seminars dedicated to emergency apparatus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of hands-on experience in a certified repair facility dealing with all types and sizes of vehicle repairs, preferred trucks one ton or larger. Must have EVT Level I certificate.
  • Current certifications to meet EVT Level II, including the following Fire Apparatus and/orAmbulance Exams:

Working Conditions:

Work is performed occasionally in an office environment and frequently outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles and/or allergens. Work involves high risk or potentially dangerous situations, exposure to hazardous materials, excessive noise, hostile individuals, and work near hazardous/moving equipment or machinery. Work requires the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices or materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop or crouch; and talk or hear. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Clarity of vision at long distance and short distance is required. Evening, holiday, and weekend work is required. Overnight travel is required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. May be on call for emergencies.


Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
