Emergency Medical Technician - Part Time, Nights

EMT -Part Time, nights 10pm-6am

Position Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the on-duty Emergency Department (ED) Provider, the ED Tech performs various patient care activities as assigned. Communicates with the ED Registered Nurse (RN) to ensure coordination of patient care. Is able to respond quickly and appropriately in emergent situations.

Qualifications:

Education/ Experience: High School graduate or GED. Current Vermont Emergency Medical Technician certification at the Advanced level or higher. Current BLS certification.

Other Requirements: Computer literate. Experience working with an electronic health record preferred.

Proficient IV skills and airway management skills as well as proficient in-patient assessment techniques.

Essential Functions Of The Position:

• Provides patient care, treatments and services within the EMT-A scope of practice that is appropriate for the patient’s condition and psychosocial/ physical needs, as delegated and supervised by an ED Provider in coordination with the ED RN.
• Maintains current knowledge of growth and development over the life span. Understands age specific needs and provides age-appropriate care to all patients served. This includes pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
• Assists in the triage and assessment process by obtaining patient’s vital signs, height, weight, allergies and presenting complaint information. Communicates same to ED Provider and/or ED RN as appropriate.
• As requested by ED Provider, or in keeping with approved ED protocols, applies oxygen via nasal cannula or mask, initiates cardiac monitoring, obtains 12 lead EKGs, inserts peripheral IVs and obtains blood samples.
• Performs and records results of point of care specimen testing, demonstrating appropriate technique consistent with hospital policy and procedure. Reports abnormal results promptly to ER Provider.
• As requested by ED Provider, administers nebulizer treatments and assists with the application or BiPAP and CPAP.
• Able to assists the ED Provider with securing a patient’s airway by insertion of oral, nasal or King Airways and proper use of an Ambu Bag.
• Assist the ED Provider and ED RN with procedures as requested and within scope of practice, demonstrating good technical and manual skills.
• Observes and appropriately reports to the ED Provider and/or ED RN any changes in the patient’s condition, physically, mentally or emotionally.
• Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, recognizing cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs.
• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety. Manages and operates all equipment safely and correctly. Removes unnecessary clutter from all patient care areas.
• Restocks patient exam areas as necessary to maintain all rooms in a state of readiness.
• Performs other duties as assigned within the EMT-A scope of practice.
• Communicates effectively and appropriately with ED Provider and ED RN; documents care provided per hospital standards and policies.
• Takes the initiative to find productive and appropriate ways to keep busy during slow times. Limits personal internet/computer use, reading materials and phone calls/texts to break periods
