EMT Transport - Peak shift: $19.74 - $24.00 Hourly
EMT Transport - 24 hour shift: $16.45 - $20.00 Hourly
EMT Transport (class title: Ambulance Operator-Emergency Medical Technician) consists of three (3) shifts: 8 hours, 10 hours, and 24 hour shift. Shifts will be scheduled per the needs of the department.
NOTE: hourly pay based on 24 hour shift; overtime pay after 40 hours; most assignments are 56 hour work-weeks.

We are accepting applications to establish one employment list to fill full-time, part-time, and Extra Help (temporary) EMT Transport vacancies in All Locations for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Therefore, you must check "All Locations" on the application and must be willing to accept an assignment at any location. The selected candidate may need to travel between different sites within Santa Barbara County. The operational area may include: Santa Barbara, Buellton, Carpinteria, Goleta, Lompoc, Los Olivos, Santa Maria, New Cuyama, Solvang, and Santa Ynez.
THE POSITION: Under direct supervision, an Ambulance Operator - Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT) is responsible for responding to emergency and non-Emergency Medical aid requests; providing clinically competent basic life support care to ill and injured persons within the scope of EMT I certification; operating an ambulance; providing patient transport services to appropriate facilities; and performing related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is characterized by having primary responsibility for providing basic medical care and transport of patients within the EMT I scope of practice. Incumbents are required to make critical decisions that impact the safety, well-being, or life of patients and other prehospital responders. This classification is distinguished from the Ambulance Operator - Paramedic classification in that the latter performs more advanced medical care and functions within the scope of the required Paramedic licensure. This is a non-safety/non-firefighting classification.
Examples of Duties
  1. Responds to emergency calls as part of an emergency response team; provides basic Emergency Medical care to the ill and injured in accordance with Santa Barbara County and State of California policies and protocols and within the scope of EMT I certification; provides basic life support, rescue, and first aid to patients; obtains and records patients' vital signs and circumstances of the emergency; and assists paramedics, nurses, and other emergency personnel in providing medical care and with the preparation of advanced life support equipment.
  2. Prepares a variety of records and reports; maintains confidentiality by following all federal, state, County, and city laws and regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); and prepares reports of incidents for billing and other record-keeping purposes.
  3. Safely operates a County ambulance, and other vehicles as directed, to and from emergency scenes, adhering to related laws, regulations, and departmental policies; monitors a radio and operates communications equipment; and transports patients to hospital emergency rooms.
  4. Stays up to date on relevant rules, procedures, regulations, and protocols, including California State Emergency Medical Services (EMS) policies; participates in Emergency Medical services training and public education activities; and keeps abreast of department rules, regulations, procedures, and other training and job-related materials.
  5. Maintains vehicles in a state of readiness; participates in station and equipment maintenance activities; cleans and decontaminates equipment; and maintains and restocks the inventory of ambulance and station Emergency Medical services supplies.
  6. Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
  1. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
  2. Must possess and maintain a current and valid California EMT I (Basic) certificate or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certificate; AND,
  3. Must possess and maintain a current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Professional certification provided by the American Heart Association, or a Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA)-approved equivalent; AND,
  4. Must possess and maintain a current and valid Class "C" State of California Driver License with an acceptable driving history.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Professional EMT experience.
  2. State of California Ambulance Driver Certification (DS61).
Special Requirements:
The following education requirements are highly desirable (however, if employees are hired into this classification without these educational requirements, they must successfully complete them during the hiring process or new hire orientation training):

  • Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogen course
  • Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator course
Knowledge of: basic Emergency Medical services procedures and equipment; emergency ambulance and transportation procedures; Emergency Medical Technician practices and procedures; emergency radio communication procedures; medical terminology and documentation; emergency vehicle maintenance and operation; basic English; and basic math operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Ability to: provide basic medical care to the ill and injured within the scope of EMT I certification; handle a high volume of emergency calls with tact, good judgment, and courtesy; safely and effectively operate an emergency vehicle under normal and emergency response conditions; read maps and learn County geography and street layouts; work effectively in difficult and hazardous emergency situations and environments; exercise strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication, and organizational skills; be attentive to detail; work cooperatively with other employees and medical agencies to provide the highest level of patient care; work under such adverse conditions as working outdoors in inclement weather, exposure to bodily fluids, etc.; read and interpret all required documents and write required reports and correspondence, including patient care reports (PCRs), both electronic and paper based; understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely, orally, in writing, and on the radio; consistently deliver outstanding customer service to all internal and external patients and customers; lift and carry heavy objects as well as move and transport patients; perform moderate and heavy physical activities for prolonged periods; maintain a professional manner and appearance at all times; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of individuals, including but not limited to coworkers, supervisors, patients, patient families, customers and other professional agencies (law enforcement, fire departments, hospital personnel, etc.
Supplemental Information
APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:

  2. Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. You must pass this assessment in order to continue in the selection process.
  3. Oral Board Exam: The oral board examinations are tentatively scheduledforDecember 6 - 20, 2023. Candidates' final score and rank on the eligible list will be determined by the evaluations in the supplemental questionnaire ranking assessment and oral board examination.

Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking Assessment and Oral Board Exam to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER: Live Scan and Background Check: Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, the selected candidate's appointment is contingent upon successful completion of a Live Scan and background check which includes a conviction history check. A Live Scan is electronic fingerprint scanning that is certified by the State Department of Justice. Further instructions about when and how to complete the Live Scan will be included in the offer letter. Appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period.
