Definition

EMD: An Emergency Medical Dispatcher is a professional telecommunicator, tasked with the gathering of information related to medical emergencies, the provision of assistance and instructions by voice, prior to the arrival of Emergency Medical services (EMS), and the dispatching and support of EMS resources responding to an emergency call. The term "Emergency Medical Dispatcher" is also a certification level and a professional designation, certified through the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APSCOI) and the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch. Many dispatchers, whether certified or not, will dispatch using a standard Emergency Medical dispatch protocol.

The Position

Under supervision of the Communications Center Manager, an EMD performs a variety of skilled functions; receives and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls; provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) direction and participates in the work of a dispatcher/ call taker and performs other duties as assigned.

Training Process

A new-hire in the AlphaOne Communications Center will receive further educations in the following categories:

· Patient Transport Coordinator (PTC) role and responsibilities

· Inter-Facility Transportation (IFT) requirements and procedures

· Wheelchair Access Van (WAV) requirements and procedures

· Emergency Medical Dispatching and Call-Taking requirements and procedures

· EMS Controller requirements and procedures

Upon completing the Communications Center Training, there is a clearing process to determine the proficiency of a trainee. All trainees must pass the clearing process in order to manage any station withing the AlphaOne Commutations Center.

Educational requirements

· High school diploma

· Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification preferred but not required (AlphaOne Ambulance will assist with obtaining the certification, if unavailable)

· CPR certification preferred but not required (AlphaOne Ambulance will assist with obtaining the certification, if unavailable)

· Medical Terminology knowledge preferred, but not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Communicate clearly with the public using a telephone.

· Remain calm and effective and exercise good judgement in emergency situations.

· Ability to prioritize emergencies.

· Obtain and act on information quickly.

· Have a general geographical knowledge of the Sacramento and the surrounding area with ability to learn the geographical areas served.

· Work well with others in the department and with other departments

· Must be able to multitask efficiently and effectively

Experience

· Customer Service: 1 year (Preferred, not required)

· Typing 40 WPM + (Preferred, not required)

· Pay Starting at: $25.00 per hour

· Starting at: $63,700 Annually
