Job Description
JOB TITLE: English as a Second Language Teacher
TYPE OF POSITION: Certified
REPORTS TO: Building Principals and ESL Program Coordinator
POSITION PURPOSE: To pre teach identified ESL and LEP (Limited English Proficient) students (Elementary, Middle School, and High School) with academic, social, and manipulative skills by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
  1. Plan daily instruction consistent with ESL curriculum and objectives.
  2. Plan and implements a variety of activities to stimulate the processes of

language learning and acquisition as well as content-area learning.
  1. Manage pupil behavior.
  2. Demonstrate interest and concern in students and parents through notes,

phone contact, and/or home visits.
  1. Administer the WIDA ACCESS test and the WIDA APT to LEP (Limited

English Proficient) students.
  1. Evaluate student progress through standardized and teacher designed

tests, observation and supervision of daily assignments.
  1. Develop specific objectives for each student on an individualized basis.
  2. Coordinate lesson plans with general education staff to share in

instructional responsibilities for ESL students. Team teaches with general
education teachers as appropriate, modeling instructional techniques
appropriate for classrooms containing LEP students and promoting
multicultural material in the curriculum.
  1. Provide translation and interpretation services as time permits.
  2. Comply with job description for certified classroom employees for the

district.
  1. Maintain records of ESL enrollment and English language proficiency

levels for all ESL students.
  1. Meet regularly with ESL Program Coordinator and/or staff for training,

and to ensure consistent teaching practices throughout the ESL program.
  1. Demonstrate the ability to work harmoniously with all persons in the

school and community.
  1. Perform other duties as directed by ESL Program Coordinator, Assistant

Superintendent for Instruction, and Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of

Education.
  1. Certification in Bilingual and /or ESL Education preferred.
  2. Successful teaching experience.
  3. Sensitivity to needs of LEP (Limited English Proficient) students.
  4. Proficiency in English and Spanish (written and verbal) desired.
  5. Ability to plan and organize.
  6. Skills in human relations.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively before groups of students, teachers,

staff, and parents.
  1. Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.

The employee should be able to use the following machines, tools, equipment, and work aids which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: pen, pencil, pointer, stylus, projector, public address system, tape recorder, blackboard, chalk, charts, diagrams, examinations, manuals, maps, publications, reference books, textbooks, and computers.
