Job description

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Under general supervision of the school principal designs and implements the district’s comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model and the Iowa Framework for School Counseling Programs. As an Elementary School Counselor will work to address the career, academic, and social-emotional development of ALL students. This position will be to support students in K-5th Grade.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Development & Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

  • Knowledgeable in counseling techniques, strategies, and student assessment procedures.

  • Uses the majority of time delivering the comprehensive school counseling program directly to students through guidance curriculum, individual student planning, and responsive services.

  • Meets weekly with the building principal to discuss the comprehensive school counseling program and student specific needs.

  • Develops and maintains a written plan for the effective delivery of the school counseling program.

  • Aligns the building’s school counseling program to the district’s comprehensive school counseling program, the ASCA national model, and the Iowa Framework for School Counseling Programs.

  • Provides appropriate information to school staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program.

  • Attends Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) at the building level as needed and is part of a PLC with the district counseling department.


Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program


  • Guidance Curriculum: Works to ensure that the delivery of the counseling curriculum is aligned to the ASCA national standards.

  • Guidance Curriculum: Collaboratively delivers additional developmentally appropriate, and prevention-oriented, curriculum as needed at the building level.

  • Responsive Services: Provides individual counseling to students with identified concerns.

  • Responsive Services: Provides small group skill-building to students with identified concerns and needs to the extent defined by the ASCA standards.

  • Responsive Services: Implements an effective referral and follow-up process for connecting students, with additional community resources as needed.


At-Risk Services


  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance to assist with appropriate interventions.

  • Serves as the building 504 Coordinator. Facilitates meetings, coordinates services, disseminates information, completes documentation, and maintains records for students who are eligible for services under this federal statute.

  • Advocates for the needs of students and their families.

  • Provides individual or small group interventions to students who are identified as at-risk students, as defined by the district’s policies, to positively impact attendance, behavior and/or academic achievement in the classroom.


Accountability


  • Participates in building and district professional development opportunities.

  • Adheres to Federal and State laws, district policies, district procedures, and the ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • Measures the effectiveness of the school counseling program and shares results as appropriate.

  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.

  • Assist with other duties as assigned.


HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling from an accredited institution of higher education.

  • Iowa teaching license or professional service license with endorsement 172.

  • Interpersonal skills that exhibit friendliness, tact, patience and courtesy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills.

  • Knowledge of classroom technologies or willingness to acquire the required knowledge.

  • Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the daily requirements of the position.
