Position Description
St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Utility Electrician (water/wastewater) for our well established Facility Maintenance Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Facility Maintenance Department is responsible for reading, billing and collection of approximately 50,000 service connections, approximately 400 lift stations, 200 step tanks, 15 water and wastewater plants along with several wells and booster stations. It also administers and coordinates utility status management reporting, reviews engineering drawings, construction management and performs inspections and surveys for new construction just to name a few!
Employees work in a team environment with two common goals in mind: to provide the best services to our citizens and to be the best public utility in North Florida. The Facility Maintenance Electrician is dynamic and fast paced. Electricians work Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm and Fridays from 7:00 am to 11:00 am with a ½ hour lunch break. St. Johns County Utility Department utilizes City Works asset maintenance software which collects data and maintenance record keeping.
The newly selected Utility Electrician will work together with a team of experienced and knowledgeable personnel to maintain sewer lift stations, water and wastewater facilities, wells, and step tanks.

Examples of Duties
The ideal Facility Maintenance Electrician candidate must possess St. Johns County core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Inspects, test, calibrates, installs, maintains, and repairs all electrical equipment and systems as part of utility operations, to include water and wastewater treatment plants and lift station.
  • Consults with mechanics, technicians, plants operations personnel, and outside service providers to coordinate planned installation, repair, and preventative maintenance work.
  • Makes recommendations for repair methods and techniques to correct problems and maintain system stability and cost estimates.
  • Installs and programs variable frequency drives (VFD)
  • Performs a variety of high skilled maintenance on single phase and three phase systems with voltage up to 460 volts.
  • Maintains computerized records and work orders though our Cityworks maintenance program.
  • Demonstrates and trains employees in work methods, proper use of tools and equipment, and relevant safety hazards.
  • Operates heavy equipment associated with industrial electrical repair.
  • Respond to routine and emergency service calls during and after normal working hours.
  • Maintains full time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Candidates for the Electrician I position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Must have held a full-time position as an electrician, electrician apprentice or electrician helper for a minimum of two years.
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to thoroughly understand and perform the major duties of the position.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid State of Florida or St. Johns County Electric Journeyman's License required for Electrician II designation. Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid State of Florida or St. Johns County Class I Master Electrician License required for Electrician III designation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

Candidates for the Electrician II position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Four (4) years of verifiable work experience as an electrician and completion of an accredited apprenticeship program; or six (6) years of verifiable work experience as an electrician.
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida or St. Johns County Electric Journeyman's License required for Electrician II designation. Possession of a valid State of Florida or St. Johns County Class I Master Electrician License required for Electrician III designation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

Candidates for the Facility Maintenance Electrician III position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Minimum two (2) years working at a full-time position as a Licensed Master Electrician. A candidate with five (5) years of full-time experience as a Journeyman Electrician may be considered; however, candidate would be hired as an Electrician II and placed at PG15.
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida or St. Johns County Class I Master Electrician License required for Electrician III designation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
