Job description

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of Electrical Lines and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, efficient, and effective provision of electrical services.Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of overhead Electrical Lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment.

  • Constructs and maintains overhead Electrical Lines; repairs sagging wires and overhead equipment connected to the electrical system;
  • Operates off-road equipment in the construction and maintenance of utility lines;
  • Serves as lead worker in assisting and training crew workers;
  • Secures new wires and insulators to splice wires to adjoining sections of the line and complete the electrical circuit;
  • Responds to customer service calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions;
  • Detaches existing wires and transfers new wires to utility poles in projects involving system upgrades in electrical voltage capacity;
  • Sets residential single-phase and commercial poly-phase meters; makes load checks and provides other customer services;
  • Installs and maintains streetlights, including overhead and underground lighting and residential and commercial security lights;
  • Identifies the location of circuits and cut-out fuses;
  • Operates trencher, backhoe, and other equipment in the installation of service lines;
  • Locates underground Electrical Lines and identifies project work areas for service work; climbs utility poles as required;
  • Performs duties of groundsman or apprentice lineman as needed;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.
  • Knowledge of electrical construction, maintenance, and repair practices and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code, the National Electrical Safety Code, and the Southern Building Code as they apply to electric service connection;
  • Knowledge of safety procedures;
  • Skill in the use of such tools and equipment as backhoes, trenchers, and compression tools;
  • Skill in working with high-voltage Electrical Lines;
  • Skill in operating bucket and line trucks;
  • Skill in climbing utility poles;
  • Skill in utilizing a line locator, fault locator, recording voltage meter, and other specialized tools and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Skill in oral and written communication;
  • Ability to interpret and carry out complex oral instructions;
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to one hundred (100) pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, climbing poles, bending, crouching or stooping, and using tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

  • Associate degree preferred;
  • Four (4) to five (5) years of related experience; equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Journeyman Electric Lineman preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Pre-employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
