The Johnston County Public Utilities Unit has an immediate opening for an Electrical Instrumentation Technician.

Duties and Responsibilities

Repairs and programs all SCADA systems for water and wastewater plants, pumping stations, elevated tanks, meters, and related equipment. Maintains and repairs pump control panels and associated electrical equipment. Maintains control valves associated with the water distribution and sewer collection systems. Installs, maintains and calibrates flow meters. Works with outside contractors involved in the installation of SCADA, electrical and electronic equipment; coordinates with engineers on projects regarding proposed electrical capacities and equipment. Installs and maintains video surveillance systems and alarm systems to insure security and safety of water and facilities.
Meets with staff, engineers and other professionals for SCADA and computer system development. Maintains FCC license for wireless operations of the department. Orders and maintains inventory and parts for maintenance and repair activities. Maintains and installs fiber lines and communication cable for connectivity. Analyzes equipment for failures and malfunctions, isolating and repairing potential problems.
Trouble shoots electrical problems at water and wastewater facilities.
Installs flow meters, runs conduit and various electrical wiring needs throughout the water and wastewater facilities. Plans and assigns work; monitors work quality; provides training and performance coaching and evaluation for assigned staff; may participate in hiring and disciplinary actions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of operating principles and practices, and the maintenance requirements of water and wastewater plant equipment, controls and related equipment. Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in instruments and electrical devices repair.
Considerable knowledge of instrumentation and calibration equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the application of information technology in water and wastewater treatment, pumping, and related systems.
Considerable knowledge of VFD, PLC, and soft starters. Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common mechanical equipment. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and related safety precautions required in the work of the unit. Some knowledge of modern and effective supervisory principles and practices including motivation, communications, leadership, performance coaching and collaborative conflict resolution. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public. Ability to read utility line maps, operation and service manuals, schematic drawings and to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and record work activities. Ability to prepare detailed written reports and correspondence.

Desired Education and Experience

Associate degree in electrical or electronic disciplines, at least 5 years experience in water and/or wastewater plant electrical systems and controls; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
