Job description

Summary of Position:

An Electrical Engineering Technician II will be responsible for technical work in connection with the design, drafting, inspection, and cost estimating in the construction and operation of electric, overhead (OHE) and underground high-voltage distribution systems and performs other related work as required.

Project work includes design within industrial facilities (i.e., oil & gas, saltwater disposals) of the electrical power system for medium and low voltages (35,000 volts and below). Areas of design include overhead electrical distribution, power system analysis, cost analysis, relay programming, and visits to the project sites.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

The following represents most of the duties performed by the position but is not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory, environmental, and safety rules and standards, as well as corporate policies.

As an Electrical Engineering Technician II, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading in field coordination, field surveys, transformer load surveys and development plan checking of OHE projects.
  • Performing construction inspection of underground and overhead infrastructure.
  • Assisting with research and development for other electrical projects.
  • Preparing and conducting electrical troubleshooting, collecting data, and calculating and recording results.
  • Preparing construction bids, execution packages and defining scope of work.
  • Assisting in performing power system analyses that include but not limited to short circuit, relay coordination and arc flash
  • Preparing purchase packages/specifications for pole mounted and pad mounted transformers.
  • Developing and review electrical technical drawings, specifications and single line diagrams.
  • Preparing man-hour estimates and assist in developing project deliverable schedule.
  • Preparing status reports on project progress and manage dependencies, risks and identify mitigation plans.
  • Being the liaison with other disciplines to process load request for electrical services, researching and determining electrical requirements to facilities.
  • Providing constructions support and working with project management team to resolve construction related issues in a timely manner.
  • Determining the effects of proposed work on existing electric infrastructure and the feasibility of alternate construction proposals.
  • Performing cost/engineering analysis.
  • Tracking and reporting monthly deduct energy usage.
  • Assisting in installing, maintaining, and repairing power distribution systems including electric motors, motor control devices, and variable speed drives.
  • Working with electricians to install new equipment including conduit and wiring.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or engineering technology from an accredited college or trade school.
  • Have a curriculum focused on power Electrical Engineering/technology preferred.
  • Must have 5-10 years’ experience, education, training and / or a combination.
  • Be familiar with computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software is preferred.
  • Be familiar with computer aided engineering software, such as SKM is preferred.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have working knowledge of motor control circuits.
  • Have strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Have basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Have demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Be self-motivated and an eager learner with an aptitude to grow and self-manage.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred, but not required.

  • Operates in both a professional and/or business casual office environment as well as in a field environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, or sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds and must be able to carry a self-contained breathing apparatus if needed. Specific vision abilities required by the job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
