Job Description
W. R. Grace is a seeking an EHSS Specialist who will be responsible for oversight of day-to-day Environmental Health, Safety and Security processes, programs and management systems at the Process Innovation and Quality center (PIQ). The PIQ includes the Analytical Services Center or ASC (Quality Control Laboratory) and the Process Innovation Center or PIC (Pilot Plant and R&D Operations). This person will report to the Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Manager at Curtis Bay.
Responsibilities
  • Leads, develops and implements safety processes, programs and guidelines ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as Grace corporate requirements.
  • Reviews engineering plans, workmanship, construction plans to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manages compliance and drives continuous improvement under Process Safety Management (PSM) including Incident Investigation, Management of Change, Compliance Audits, Emergency Planning and Response and Training.
  • Engagement of R&D personnel to ensure safety related activities are occurring in daily operations. Provides best practice suggestions and regulatory interpretation for compliance. Manages new chemical approval process and chemical inventory management.
  • Conducts investigations into allegations of safety violations, incidents or unsafe work practices and responds in a timely manner.
  • Leads and/or participates in PHAs, PSSRs, RCCAs, and JSAs ensuring continuous improvement of the ASC/PIC.
  • Facilitates and conducts EHS training including instructor led training for mandated topics to ASC/PIC personnel, contractors, and visitors as necessary
  • Develops and implements audits and inspections program to verify compliance and performance to achieve plant goals, including safety, housekeeping, corrective and preventive actions, etc.
  • Collaborates with Curtis Bay EHSS Specialist as needed on common policies, procedures and systems to ensure alignment and compliance.
  • Other duties/assignments, as requested.

Physical Requirements and Environment
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Safety/Industrial Hygiene or other technical discipline or equivalent safety, health, or environmental experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in safety, process safety, training and industrial hygiene or related operational/maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong demonstrable knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc).
  • Working knowledge of regulatory compliance in a manufacturing and laboratory setting.
  • Availability for on-call and after hours work as needed.
  • Ability to utilize computer applications such as MS Office products and other specialized support systems within Grace.
  • High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities.
  • Ability to provide consultation and advice to a diverse audience effectively.
  • Ability to handle multiple compliance tasks and decisions with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced in an Unionized environment.
  • Prior experience at Grace manufacturing facilities
  • Prior experience using Enablon or other health and safety incident and management of change tracking system
  • Prior experience conducting investigations and root cause analysis using a variety of tools (Cause and Effect, Tap Root, Fishbone, etc)
  • Prior experience leading process hazard analyses
  • Pilot plant or Laboratory experience
