Job Purpose
We are now accepting applications for an Environmental Health and Safety Technician, reporting to the Environmental Specialist. This is group A pay and the shift is TBD based on an internal posted shift change. This is a Skill & Qualification position, so to be considered you must have the Minimum Qualifications. The EHS Technician coordinates safety and environmental initiatives. Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in water treatment, hazardous waste operations and sampling activities at the plant wastewater treatment facility. This position may involve exposure to chemicals. Coordinates the wastewater treatment operation. Ascertains compliance with all Company and Governmental regulations. Conducts water testing, analyzes results and makes required adjustments. Responds to spills and assists in clean up. The technician is also a first responder and may work during shut down periods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, but other duties may be assigned:

  1. Conducts and records daily inspections of the bag house, ventilation points, plant dust collection systems, makes and retains required records. Recognizes and reports irregularities to the Environmental Specialist, EHS Manager, and Maintenance.
  2. Reads Magnehelic gauge or other pressure drop device and observes equipment operating condition. Makes and maintains required records.
  3. Analyze data and take independent action to resolve irregularities and report to Environmental Specialist and EHS Manager. Coordinates corrections when needed in timely manner.
  4. Ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime as required.
  5. Maintain required records. Detailed list in work instructions.
  6. Collects and labels all plant hazardous waste and prepares waste for shipment according to procedures and regulations
  7. Performs waste and storm water sampling and assists Environmental Specialist with monthly reports.
  8. Accompany state, federal and company inspectors when required.
  9. Operate equipment including, but not limited to floor cleaner, lift trucks, common hand tools, and read meters. .
  10. Mix acid for delivery to production areas as needed, maintain full tanks at proper specific gravity as required.
  11. Working knowledge of acid delivery system, pumps, valves, etc.
  12. Understanding of sources of used acid, collection pits, pumps, valves and delivery lines to acid reclaim tans and delivery back to user areas at gravity required.
  13. Clean out of lead dust from dust collector. Includes containment, packaging and shipping of lead dust and other hazardous materials as directed.
  14. Move up, around, and below machinery and facilities as necessary to visually observe, monitor, inspect, and adjust.
  15. Ability to accurately enter data using electronic, paper, and other means to record information.
  16. Perform daily housekeeping, hygiene & cleanliness procedures. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  17. Demonstrate a consistently positive, cooperative, self-motivated, courteous and professional attitude

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Two years of manufacturing, distribution center, or related work experience.
  2. High school diploma or GED is required.
  3. One year of experience operating a PIT (Powered Industrial Truck) required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. One or more years of environmental, health, and safety experience in a manufacturing or distribution center facility.
  2. Certification or degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related field.
  3. Experience inspecting, managing, or shipping/transporting hazardous waste in accordance with RCRA and DOT regulations.

  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds,
  • Ability to work in a hot, humid environment and outside in all weather.
  • Able to traverse to and from all areas of plant, including multiple storied buildings, roof tops, bins. This position requires frequent traversing areas, both raised and below grade, accessed by ladders, steep stairs, and catwalks, sitting; occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or bending.
  • Must be able to operate machinery levers, pedals and observe gauges.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, alignment, color, comparative size, and ability to adjust focus, observe opacity.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and communicate in standard business English. Good written and oral communications skill with the ability to respond to complex inquiries. Ability to write complex instructions and correspondence. Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, vendors and other employees.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Must be able to compute rate, ratio and percent with the ability to develop and interpret graphs used for presentation.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions supplied in both written and verbal format. Ability to prioritize and take independent corrective action.
Computer Skills: Ability to use standard office software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: (Must have or be able to attain within one year). Method 9 emissions observation and record keeping certification. Hazardous Waste and DOT Hazardous Materials Shipper Certifications.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently and take corrective action in fast paced position.
Travel Required: Minimal travel is required. Must have valid driver's license.
