Position Summary
Big Bend Community College, a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington, invites applications for an Educational Planner in the college's Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) Program. This position is full-time, overtime eligible and reports to the Director of Adult Education. Funding for this position comes from grants and contracts. This position is dependent upon continued funding.
The Educational Planner is responsible in providing services to facilitate the enrollment and success of BEdA (Basic Education for Adults) students enrolled in Open Doors, High School completion, GED, HEP (High School Equivalency Program), and/or English Language Acquisition (ELA) related classes. The BEdA Program provides English language classes, high school completion and professional-technical education to youth and adults.
This position has extensive interaction with BBCC faculty, staff, students, parents, the public, and school district personnel to support the operation of the Open Doors and BEdA program.

Essential Job Duties
  1. Respond to BEdA program inquiries, providing appropriate information to prospective, current, and returning students and/or parents on the graduation and enrollment requirements.
  2. Provide intake services and eligibility determination to new BEdA & WES students, including but not limited to program eligibility screening, orientation, academic advising, registration, and barrier assessment services.
  3. Complete transcript and prior learning credit evaluations to determine required coursework and develop educational plan
  4. Educational and career advising to aid student educational plan development and selection of BBCC's educational pathways options while making referrals to other campus or community services or resources as appropriate.
  5. Provide students with academic advising and continued educational planning; monitoring academic progress; and initiating retention interventions as appropriate.
  6. Provide student transition services to college, work, or military opportunities, including co-enrolling students in college classes, career advising, and coordinating with employers, and college recruiters or advisors.
  7. Case manage students regarding their progress, accessing resources, or removing barriers while achieving their education, employment, and career goals.
  8. Develop and maintain accurate student files and data collection processes to include reporting for grants, department goals and state or federal reporting
  9. Establish and maintain accurate computerized student files and record keeping systems; and collect, maintain, and report on student outcomes data.
  10. Serve as a resource and advocate for students and assist them in becoming self-directed in their educational planning process.
  11. Design and deliver PowerPoint presentations and workshops to students; topics include foundation skills such as technology literacy, academic success strategies, study skills, problem solving, critical thinking, job readiness skills, and career decision-making strategies.
  12. Provide outreach to other agencies and communities to facilitate enrollment, discuss policies, referral procedures, and services or assistance to students.
  13. Conduct outreach visits and presentations/orientations at schools, or community events in the evenings or weekends, as needed. Act as a liaison for Big Bend Community College, with high school personnel, students, and parents regarding information on the college and BEdA programs, including admission requirements, policies, and procedures.
  14. Serve as liaison to campus departments to coordinate services for BEdA students, including academic support, as well as multicultural and career exploration activities.
  15. Assist with activities to measure the effectiveness of services to students. Serve on college committees and assist with representation at community educational and outreach events.

OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  2. Ensure no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to, security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  3. Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  4. Conduct self in a professional manner and ensure the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner reflective of the college's values.
  5. Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

  • Skill in maintaining databases, tracking information, and generating reports for various audiences.

  • Ability to describe and explain policies, procedures, and program requirements in a manner that is relevant and appropriate for the audience.
  • Ability to proactively identify needs of student, tailor resources or provide referral to other services and resources as needed.
  • Ability to assist students--especially low-income, first-generation students, students of color and migrant/seasonal farmworkers and their dependents--earn credentials including a high school diploma or GED to prepare for entry into higher-paying, high-demand fields with value in the labor market.
  • Ability to facilitate and provide informational sessions to program students regarding resources, and tools in employment training, basic food, college services, and other local services.
  • Ability to conduct research to identify resources and secure new community partnerships for program students.
  • Ability to work with and support populations of varying socio-economic or ability statuses including low-income and language barriers.
  • Knowledge of student support programs at BBCC and surrounding communities to provide students with referral to appropriate BBCC resources and programs.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, education, or a related field from a nationally accredited institution OR at least two (2) years of experience providing case management, counseling or related direct services to at-risk individuals or sixteen to twenty-one year old youth.
  • One year of experience providing academic or career advising.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • Experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical, and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous case management or counseling experience.
  • Experience with federal or state funded programs, state agencies, or non-profits, especially BEdA, HEP, and Open Doors programs.
  • Experience working with financial aid applications and award processes.
  • Experience coordinating work-based learning opportunities.
  • Experience with developmental education coursework and strategies.
  • Familiarity with the Open Doors, BEdA, and/or HEP Programs.
  • Previous experience in K-12 or higher education, preferably at a community college.
  • Experience with postsecondary advising.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service and/or public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of community and campus resources.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Ukraine Proficiency.
