To facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system. The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing being educated in the school district.
Requirements:
o Educational Level: Bachelor Degree; Educational Interpreter License
o Proficiency Skills: Written and oral communication skills, student management, supervisory and leadership skills. Ability to employ a variety of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learners. Ability to deal with multiple tasks, computer competence, organizational and interpersonal skills.
o Personal Skills: Pleasant personality, cooperative attitude, physical skills and stamina to perform essential duties.
1. Demonstrates appropriate verbal and written communication skills.
2. Performs routine duties and tasks with little or no direct supervision.
3. Participates in extracurricular activities and/or serves on designated
committees.
4. Demonstrates loyalty to the school, school system, and administrators.
5. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal.
6. Maintains confidentiality.
7. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the use of the internet and email as applicable to job responsibilities.
8. Acts in a professional manner and maintains a professional attitude towards the public and colleagues; adheres to cultural diversity, and exhibits the fundamentals of good public/customer service.
9. Complies with school, system, state, and federal regulations and policies, including the PSC Code of Ethics, as related to job requirements.
10. Maintains a professional appearance as appropriate for job responsibilities.
11. Provide expressive and voice interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in general education classes (this may include American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English and/or Oral Interpreting).
12. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, provide tutoring/review services as necessary for students who are deaf or hard of hearing when it does not interfere with the task of interpreting.
13. Assist with the set up of note taking services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, when necessary.
14. Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meeting, Individualized Education Program (IEP) conference, Multidisciplinary Team meetings and/or informal staffing. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.
15. Serves as liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
16. Lead or assist in providing in-services to hearing students, staff and parents as requested in regard to sign language, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting and consumer education.
17. Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance. (Compensation by the school district for interpreting services provided outside of normal school hours should also be agreed upon in advance.)
18. Assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters.
19. Use any scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.
20. Encourages students to express themselves.
21. Reinforces basic learning skills effectively.
22. Demonstrates understanding of how children learn.
23. Encourages creative expression.
24. Interprets directions, lectures, conversations, films, special projects, assemblies, etc.
25. Assists in providing continuity of instruction for student goals as identified in students' IEP's or assigned by the teacher.
26. Interprets student responses as accurately as possible with voice.
27. All other duties assigned.
