Job Description:
This Educational Coach and Learning Specialist in the Office of Disability Support Service provides intensive, essential learning strategies for at-risk students, through proactive, early, sustained, individualized support to enhance student success and to develop independent learners. The Educational Coach & Learning Specialist provides comprehensive and proactive case management for students with identified risk factors; assists individual students or groups in developing effective problem-solving skills, decision-making, and personal responsibility to overcome barriers impeding academic success; helps develop curriculum on supporting students with neurodivergent conditions and learning differences; provides support and consultation as well as deliver workshops and other trainings for faculty and staff, and Fredonia's tutors, on best practices.

KEY RESPONSBILITIES
Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will:
  • Support the inclusion of students with disabilities;
  • Foster student independence, including help with social skills and functional life skills;
  • Encourage appropriate college behavior;
  • Draw from research in the learning sciences to develop and facilitate a range of skills-based group interventions, such as workshops, academic programs, and group coaching, as well as asynchronous resources for students who are managing neurodivergent conditions and/or learning differences. These include workshops tailored to specific courses and campus programs on topics such as: time management, procrastination, academic motivation, exam preparation, effective study strategies, reading strategies, goal-setting, resilience, growth mindset, and more;
  • Serves as an advocate and resource for students navigating college processes such as student code of conduct, grade appeals, and complaint process;
  • Send weekly email updates to supervisors regarding student progress;
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding educational information and records;
  • Work as a member of a team, with the ability to communicate with faculty and staff;
  • Help develop curriculum on supporting students with neurodivergent conditions and learning differences; deliver workshops and other trainings for faculty and staff, and Fredonia's tutors, on best practices;
  • Participate in institutional committees and trainings that are related to student success and retention goals and enhance opportunities for students with disabilities;
  • Remains current with college and SUNY initiatives, relevant technology, and coaching/advising pedagogy.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and refinement;
  • Provide academic advisement to students;
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS
  • Demonstrated interest and experience working with student populations that are highly diverse in terms of disabilities, neurodiversity, and academic abilities and interests
  • One or more years of experience teaching or conducting workshops or other trainings in a postsecondary setting
  • Excellent verbal, listening, writing, problem-solving and interpersonal communication skills, including tact and diplomacy.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Assessing student needs and providing appropriate resources and/or referrals.
  • Ability to work an established schedule which may include occasional evenings and weekends, at various points during the year.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks, especially complex projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Physical Requirements*: Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds

Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;
  • Experience with instructional technology;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree
  • Coursework or other formal training (such as ongoing professional development) related to supporting students with neurodivergent conditions and learning differences
  • At least one year of experience in coaching or as a Learning Specialist, teaching skills related to neurodivergent conditions and learning differences
  • Demonstrated experience working in a diverse environment, inclusive of people with disabilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to identify students' academic needs, make recommendations, and follow-up
  • Interest in, and commitment to, community engagement.

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, 10 month, SL3, UUP represented position beginning immediately. This temporary position may be eligible for renewal contingent on sufficient funding and the business needs of the university.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
