Job purpose
The position is for an eLine development/project engineer in the Core Products group within Commercial Vehicle (CV) Product Development. This position will focus on the controls development within the power electronics for our high speed turbomachinery. Communication and collaboration with a team of engineers focusing on controls and high speed motors/controllers will be necessary. Experience with controls simulation, motors, powertrain management hardware will also be necessary.
The Core Products Electronics & Controls group is a small team that engages on new products during the concept and development phase. In the Concept phase the team surveys the turbocharger marketplace for innovation opportunities and then probes those opportunities for functional proof of concept (PoC) and commercial viability. Then developing the products to transition from the concept to the production phase in the areas of system requirements development and management, system calibration, system problem solving, sensor system development, and system integration.
The Controls Engineer position within this group is primarily responsible for motor and controls development. The position will also be responsible for guiding and specifying the SW requirements and functional safety aspects for the eLine systems. Close collaboration with the rest of the group will be necessary so that the SW evolves into system-level controls and ultimately PoC results as rapidly as possible.
Key responsibilities
  • Assist in debugging through established problem solving techniques and debug on bench
  • Interface with Systems engineering to ensure software requirements are documented appropriately and analyzed prior to software design and implementation
  • Guide implementation of new electronics, sensors, and components into mechatronic systems
  • Understands requirement to generate controls implementations, and system models
  • Ensure document traceability from requirements through test cases
  • Use of data acquisition systems over CCP/XCP (e.g.INCA, ATi,Vector) for calibration and debugging
  • Work as part of a development team
  • Communicates and enforces safe work procedures.
  • Identifies and closes safety issues (suggestions, inspection and investigation findings) and their corrective actions.
  • Determine functional requirements for product hardware and software including electric motor, power electronics, cooling methods, and performance criteria.
  • Review EMI / EMC test plans and results for electrical hardware and motors.
  • Development and support turbocharger electric high speed motor technology. This includes application selection guidance, validation, controller tuning, and system trouble shooting.
  • Electronic understanding from a performance, hardware, and microprocessor software standpoint. This includes the ability to use and interpret LIN, SENT, CAN and PWM communication protocols.
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies.
  • Understands and adheres to current health, safety, and environmental policies.

What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or similar engineering field
  • Experience with electromechanical and/or magnetic systems.
  • Knowledge/Experience with MATLAB-Simulink is required.
  • Knowledge/Experience of control theory is preferred.
  • Proficiency with CAN and support tools preferred
  • Proficiency in calibration methods and tools is preferred.
  • Broad background in engineering technical disciplines that include vibration, heat transfer, stress, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, controls, magnetics and EMI/EMC shielding.
  • Ability to manage suppliers when procuring development hardware.
  • Understanding of FFT analyzers. experience with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, digital multimeters and similar electrical test equipment.
  • Knowledge of high temperature instrumentation for measuring flow, pressure, temperature, imbalance, rotor motion, and vibration.
  • Understanding of switched reluctance, induction, and permanent magnet motor design & control for both high and low speed applications as well as speed and position sensor technology.
  • Project Management skills including the ability to demonstrate logical analysis and clear communication.
  • Fundamental sound electrical engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.
  • Knowledge/Experience with Motor-CAD, Maxwell, Speed preferred.
  • Proficient with basic PC tools such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project.
  • Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).
