RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Special Education Teacher develops and provides intense and specialized instruction to meet the unique cognitive, social, academic, and behavioral needs of students; evaluates and assesses student progress; ensures specially designed instruction in the least restrictive environment; follows state and federal mandated timelines and procedures; and maintains the IEP of assigned students. They demonstrate high standards of professionalism and ethics while maintaining individual student confidentiality.


  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals (e.g. behavioral, motor development and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with parents, instructional staff, and other school personnel for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving student educational plan objectives.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Differentiates instruction (e.g. online curriculum, alternative curriculum, multimedia, assistive technology, modified content, multi-sensory, etc.) for the purpose of providing students with different instructional avenues that address individualized learning within established curriculum guidelines.
  • Informs parents/legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student's achievements, developing methods for improvement, and reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Manages student behavior and/or activities in a variety of educational environments for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. IEP meetings, staff meetings, parent teacher conferences, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, progress reports, exit plans, data sheets, lesson plans, evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress, making goals, proportion for transitions, and meeting state and federal requirements.
  • Supervise and instruct paraprofessionals in the instructional and data collection methods required and to provide the materials to complete the tasks assigned to paraprofessionals.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, related service providers, other school personnel, and families for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the educational environment.
  • Assists students with adaptive devices as trained and needed.
  • May perform additional duties or tasks as designated.

LICENSE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university. Valid Indiana certification with required Special Education endorsements for the assignment and specialized training for the program area assigned. Intense Intervention License preferred but those seeking a transition to teaching license with appropriate experience may be considered.
