Summary Description:

The CDL Driver is responsible for safely operating the assigned commercial fleet to pick up and deliver commodities to various locations while maintaining and ensuring the fleet is in proper working order.


Essential Functions:

  • Perform daily "pre-trip" inspection on the tractor/truck you will be driving for the day
  • Perform pre-trip trailer/boxes before use if applicable.
  • Ensure proper tie-downs, chains, binders, and torque bars are available
  • Each time a new truck/tractor is used, complete a new pre-trip inspection report
  • Complete driver’s daily "Vehicle Inspection Reports" every day
  • These are federal documents that are reported to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and must be completed accurately and honesty
  • Give daily "Vehicle Inspection Reports" to Dispatcher at the end of the day
  • If urgent repairs are infringing on safety, discuss with Dispatcher immediately to resolve the issue
  • Check "Scrap Runner'' handheld devices for work to be performed
  • Address questions about load order, etc. with Dispatcher
  • Complete "post-trip" inspection on the tractor/ truck and equipment used
  • Clean out vehicle and/or tractor at the end of shift or when finished with that vehicle/tractor for the day
  • Return any borrowed equipment such as tie-downs/chains/straps/tools, etc., to the original vehicle that it was borrowed from during the day, before going home
  • When repairs are needed, complete a detailed "Repair Order Request," and turn into maintenance before any work repair work beings
  • Once a "Repair Order Request" is completed and maintenance has signed off on the respective Vehicle Inspection Report, driver must sign the Inspection Report to acknowledge repairs have been made.
  • Any issues with complete/ incomplete repair orders are to be addressed with dispatch immediately.
  • Last person out needs to lock the gate (when applicable)
  • Attend all driver safety meetings
  • Comply with DOT FMCSA and Company drug and alcohol policies and procedures
  • Adhere to all PNW Metal Recycling, Inc. policies and procedures, including safety policies and standards
  • Maintain CDL and Medical Card
  • Other duties or cross-training in other positions may be assigned

Requirements:

Qualifications – Required:

  • Valid class A, CDL and current medical card
  • Holder of CDL for minimum of 2 years
  • 2 years of experience operating heavy duty commercial vehicles
  • Ability to operate a manual transmission
  • Solid knowledge of DOT FMCSA safety guidelines
  • Solid knowledge of safety processes and procedures
  • Ability to operate smart phone or tablet
  • Ability to drive to/from location to location and sit for most of shift in vehicle


Qualifications – Desired:

  • Experience with end dumps, roll off and/or flat beds
  • Experience with e-Roads or similar software program
  • Ability to speak additional language(s) helpful

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for continuous periods of time, stand for continuous periods of time, walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and type/keyboard. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; push and pull occasionally; climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, climb up and down steps to vehicle, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.


The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. This position requires the employee to have the ability to sit regularly, stand and walk frequently sometimes on uneven ground but mostly on even ground; twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually. Employee must be able to communicate by speech to multiple areas of the yard. Manual dexterity is needed to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continual awareness. Visual acuity needed for detail work and for awareness of surroundings often in unfamiliar locations (customer’s).


Travel from site to site is required for this position between several of our local scrap yards and possible vendors/customers. Our locations are dependent on our deadlines for special projects and our customer interactions, meaning that our scrap yards can become very busy during peak times. This can create unpredictable workloads, causing substantial pressure during peak times. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays and holidays
