Job Description
The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) is comprised of 12 different divisions and has over 1,400 employees. In its search for qualified applicants, DPS performs background investigations as part of the pre-employment screening process for hiring both law enforcement and non-law enforcement employees.
As a Background Investigator at DPS, you will play a crucial role in supporting the agency by conducting detailed and comprehensive background investigations. You will be responsible for gathering, analyzing, and reporting information on individuals applying for positions within DPS. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive information.
Principle Duties:
  • Conduct In-Depth Interviews: Interview subjects, references, current and past employers, and other individuals to gather relevant information about the applicant.
  • Research and Analysis: Gather and access information and facts. Utilize various criminal justice databases, public records, and other sources to conduct thorough research on applicant.
  • Report Compilation: Prepare an unbiased, fact-based, thorough, and complete report that is clear and concise. Communicate accurate information, in written form, that is grammatically correct, and in a timely manner.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and completeness of investigations.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: Handle sensitive information with the utmost confidentiality and adhere to all federal and state laws, administrative regulations, and department polices.
Qualifications:
  • Familiar with law enforcement background investigations, interview skills and investigative techniques
  • Able to communicate verbal and in written form, which includes preparing and writing reports, conducting interviews in person, by telephone or by video
  • Analyze information, identify patterns and make informed judgements
  • Ability to conduct and complete a thorough investigation, ask clarifying questions and follow up with conflicting information
  • Maintain accurate and detailed interview notes
  • Ability to navigate various computer programs, knowledge on how to share, upload, download and collaborate online
  • Effectively interact and communicate in a professional manner
Preferences may be given for the following:
  • Previous investigative or law enforcement experience
  • Experience or degree in the criminal justice field
