We are seeking a full-time, academic year Dormitory Counselor 2for theOregon School for the Deaf. Academic year staff work during the school year when students are present.
Shift: Sunday - Thursday, Swing Shift -eligible for shift differential of $1.50/hour for hours worked from 6pm-6am and anytime worked on the weekend.
Bilingual Requirement: This position requires a minimum of ASLPI level 3 or SLPI:ASL Intermediate. The successful candidate will receive a 5% bilingual differential pay upon successfully passing language assessment.

Our Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD), located in Salem, Oregon, provides direct 24-hour educational and residential services to approximately 130 students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, kindergarten through age 21. OSD also acts as a resource to the entire state, providing special activities, consultation, and educational services to students, professionals, families, and the public.
All students enrolled at the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) are entitled to the best education that our resources can provide. What You Will Do:
Our Residential Program is responsible for maintaining the educational mission of Oregon School for the Deaf and is designed to provide a variety of learning opportunities that promote students' academic endeavors, and which encourage their growth and development. We recognize that learning is not solely academic in nature. A large part of learning inevitably takes place outside the classroom. We are committed to supporting that learning through the residential experiences we provide.
Our dorm counselors are committed to providing students with a safe, comfortable and well-maintained living space in an academically enriching environment.
A day in the life may include:
  • Providing residential students with in-sight supervision, living skills instruction, PBIS instruction, recreational and leisure time activities, and a living environment, which is safe, clean, and visually attractive.
  • Planning and supervising large and small groups of students for activities such as instructional play, homework or other educational activity, organized leisure time and after school recreation activities.
  • Keeping attendance and continuously knowing the location, safety and wellbeing of each student under your care.
  • Supervising and/or participating in assisting with sports activities and other extracurricular activities.

What We Are Looking For:
Minimum and Special Qualifications (Need to have):
An Associates degree in a behavioral or social science field; OR Eighteen months experience in the skills listed below:
  • Communicating on a one-to-one basis or in groups to provide or exchange information.
  • Composing written communications such as reports, letters, and memos.
  • Organizing time and adapting work to unforeseen needs.
  • Assessing, identifying, and meeting the care, treatment, and/or training needs of disabled individuals.
  • Applying behavior modification, exercise, living skills, or other training programs in working with disabled individuals.
  • Participating with others in the development of training programs for the disabled.

Special Requirements:
ASLPI Level 3 or SLPI:ASL Intermediate or better upon hire. You must provide OSD with certification that you are ASLPI or SLPI:ASL certified within 12 weeks of start date.
Desired Attributes (Nice to have):
  • Experience (paid or unpaid) working with children ages 5-18 in a residential setting.
  • Basic behavior intervention strategies experience.
  • Ability to support students through typical school social conflicts and emotional dysregulation.
  • Practical computer skills.
  • Housekeeping and cooking experience is preferred.

Working Conditions:
  • Work shifts include evening/swing hours.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions as they occur, as a part of student supervision on and off campus.
  • At times may deal with an aggressive student or hostile parent. Occasional need to initiate behavior management techniques at various stages of student escalation.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Requires ability to obtain a Red Cross card
  • Requires driving license to provide student transportation in state vehicles
